Scientific Name: Mola mola (Linnaeus, 1758)
Sunfishes are the largest bony fish in the World, reaching more than 3 meters in length and weighing in at over 2 tons!
These docile creatures often lie on their sides on the surface of the water and drift in the current. This behaviour helps them adjust body temperatures after consecutive dives in deeper, colder water.
Despite their unusual appearance, sunfishes are graceful animals, with their silvery glow and slow mesmerizing movements of the two huge fins.
Females release up to 300 million of eggs in the water, which will later be fertilized by passing males. Developing larvae undergo three separate stages, some featuring numerous odd-looking spines and also the loss of a tail fin.
Sunfishes are notorious amongst the scientific community for carrying enormous parasite loads. More than 50 internal and external parasite species have been identified so far.
Because of their delicate nature and slow movements, sunfishes easily fall prey to drift nets and other fishing methods. Their numbers are suspected to be steadily declining as a result.
This is our daughter's newest addition to the family. He is Mark Stratton (his adopted name was Stratton, yes named after the lawn mover.). Our Grandson wanted something simple, so Mark is his new name. His Sister is Annie. she is very shy and quite fast so all I have so far is a blurry tail and butt shot. I'll introduce her later.

Common names: Climbing lily, Creeping lily, Fire lily, Flame lily, Gloriosa lily, Glory lily, Tiger claw.
Botanical name: Gloriosa superba.
Family: Colchicaceae.
Taken at Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa.
As the name suggests, the Flame lily comes in glorious colours of orange and yellow, but for some perverse reason, I decided to strip it of all colour :-)
Grandpa had no sons, therefore when his daughter married and she took on the name of her husband, Grandpa's name will fade with the memory of him after his life. These are the things he was reflecting on as he watched his precious granddaughter play.
Although named after the city of Nashville, Tennessee, USA, this species only frequents that area on migration. The breeding range of Nashville Warbler has two separate areas: one in Canada (from Nova Scotia to west-central Alberta) and northeastern USA, the other in the western USA. This individual was a late sighting, being found in the Canadian Rockies in Canmore, Alberta, in October.

The common name of this species of fungus that typically appears as a round piece of black coal-lik ball attached to a dying or dead tree trunks and branches is King Alfred’s cakes. This name originates from legend that King Alfred (who ruled in 9th century) was mistaken for a soldier by a peasant woman in the house were he was seeking a refuge after the battle. She asked him to look after cakes baking on the fire but he fell asleep…, well, another name for these fungi are coal fungi. Whether this story is true or not difficult to say because it was first told 100 years after the King lived, but the name sticks to the fungus forever.
The scientific name of this common and widespread saprotrophic fungus is Daldinia concentrica. The genus Daldinia is named in honour of Agostino Daldini, a Swiss clergyman and botanist. The specific epithet ‘concentrica’ is self-explanatory if you look at the image above showing concentric rings of the fungal body. This is where black spores are matured and then driven up to the surface and expelled outside through tiny openings. The concentric rings are thought to reflect seasonal growth like tree rings - so it is likely to be about 12 years old. Majority of trees were planted here in 2000. This fungus, when dry, can be used as tinder to light fires, hence another name the tinder bracket.
This specimen was neatly sliced in half by a chainsaw I think when this ash tree trunk was fell down and cleared of branches; a cut through the branch seen on the left. Massive clearance is taken place in this Community Woodland as part of removal ash trees infected with dieback fungus, as well as general maintenance. Primrose Hill Community woodland. Named in honour of Jack Layton, this ferry terminal commemorates a passionate advocate for social justice and beloved Canadian political leader. Jack Layton served as leader of the federal New Democratic Party from 2003 until his passing in 2011, and was known for his tireless work on housing, environmental sustainability, and equality. A longtime Toronto city councillor, Layton helped shape the city’s progressive spirit. His legacy lives on in the heart of Toronto, where this terminal connects people to the Toronto Islands—one of his favourite places. His wife, Olivia Chow, a fellow champion of social causes, is now the Mayor of Toronto, elected in 2023.

Named for its least obvious field mark, a faint blush of red on the belly that is rarely seen, the red-bellied woodpecker is the largest common woodpecker of the eastern United States. It can be found in almost any wooded area, including suburban neighborhoods and parks. It is immediately recognized by the black-and-white zebra barring on the back and the red cowl, which is limited to the back of the head in females. Tolerant of humans, it is a regular visitor to feeders, favoring sunflower seed, suet, and fruit. Highly vocal, the most common call is a loud, rolling churr, less sharp than that of the similar red-headed woodpecker. They also make softer kek notes in short series, similar to the call of a flicker. Red-bellied woodpeckers have slowly extended their range north in the past fifty years and are now found to extreme southern Canada.

Funny name for a small fishing village with a tiny harbour. But this special place in St. John's (Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada) has at least few reasons to come here:
- harbour itself;
- craft indoor area, where you can meet local talents;
- restaurant the Mallard Cottage (the 18th Century, Irish-Newfoundland style building) is always on the list of must visit restaurants of Canada;
- and of course, Quidi Vidi Brewery.
I am not exaggerating, but the best Canadian beer I had here. Local Chocolate Stout is a masterpiece!

ℹ️Info
The Little Friarbird is actually a relatively large honeyeater but it is called little due to its small size compared to other friarbirds. Also, unlike them, it lacks a horn on its bill. It is grey-brown with a bluish grey facian skin mask. The specimen here has some yellow feathers on its throat and shoulders which means it is a juvenile.
.
Little Friarbirds spend most of their time in treetops feeding on a varied diet of nectar, fruit, worms, and occasionally flowers and seeds.

The name Steven is a boy's name of English origin meaning "garland, crown". When given to me in 1959 it was the 10th most popular boy's name for usa. Today popularity well below that and falling....
Hi, my name is Barry. I'm a carpenter by trade, who loves walks in the forest, snuggling by the fire, and staying dry. I've been told I'm a bit of a hot-head, but one things for sure, ladies, I'm hot hot hot! So if you would like to see if there's a spark between us, why don't you send me a message and we'll meet for coffee and see what develops ...
Very badly done (photoshopped arms etc) for the Smile on Saturday 'Matches' theme (28-Mar-2020).
Edit: with Covid19 running rampant Barry is now in lockdown, along the rest of us Kiwis, but he's happy to still hear from any of the ladies who think he could be their perfect match ;-))

Kingfishers like to hang out near the water's edge. You can find them on almost any river, canal, lake or gravel pit. Sometimes they'll even fish at large garden ponds. They especially favour areas where it's easy for them to spot their next meal..

The name "without" is because originally the church stood outside the city walls.
There had been a Saxon church on the site in the 11th century but by 1090 it had been replaced by a Norman one. In 1394 it was rebuilt in the perpendicular gothic style during the reign of Richard II. The stone tower was added in 1682.
The church has been badly damaged by fire on three occasions: In 1545, in 1897 and during an air raid of the Blitz of the Second World War . German bombs completely gutted the church but it was restored using the plans of the reconstruction of 1545. It is also one of the very few medieval churches left in London having survived the Great Fire of London in 1666.
