Mikael Shadows was once a mortal man, but everything changed when he was supposed to be sacrificed to Ares, the god of war; instead, he was turned into a Greek demigod. It has been two in a half-centuries pass by since that horrific events happened. Now the year is 14 A.D.

XJF311219 Fight between a Dragon and a Lion (brown ink with wash on paper) by Vinci, Leonardo da (1452-1519); Gabinetto dei Disegni e Stampe, Uffizi, Florence, Italy; Italian, out of copyright

05 June 2006

Florence, Italy

Ammannati's fountain of the Roman sea god surrounded by water nymphs commemorates Tuscan naval victories. The marble statue surrounded by bronze figures sits on the corner of the Palazzo Vecchio. Created for the celebration of teh wedding between Francesco de' Medici and Joan of Austria, teh Fountain is full of allegorical meaning, though somewhat lacking in the power of expression. The bronzes by Giambologna are the best part.

Mikael Shadows was born during 23 B.C. in Sicyon, Greece where he was one of seven people to be sacrificed to Ares, the god of war. During the sacrifice ceremony something gone wrong during the process, and Mikael inadvertently became a demigod.

I also took the time to play around with some windlight settings.

115 Pictures in 2015 ... #9. Mythological Creature

Is there any more frightening mythological creature than the Grim Reaper himself??

This is the figure of Death, from the Entrance Hall at Lacock. The Hall was created in 1754–5 for John Ivory Talbot. The architect, Sanderson Miller created a room in the Gothick style, with a large chimney-piece and a barrel ceiling painted with the coats of arms of Talbot’s friends. The niches on the wall were filled with terracotta figures by an Austrian, or South German sculptor, Victor Alexander Sederbach. They were produced at Lacock between May 1755 and January 1756. Curiously, no other work by this sculptor is known.

I was walking in New York City, look up at all the buildings to try and get the theme for "mythological creature". I thought I might see an old building decorated with a Gargoyle but instead I saw I saw a lot of regular lions. Then I came upon this in Chinatown.

The Griffin, also spelled Griffon or Gryphon, is a legendary creature portrayed with the rear body of a lion, the head of an eagle with erect ears and a feathered breast with the forelegs of an eagle, including talons. This combination indicates intelligence and strength.

This vase has been in my family for more than 50 years. My Great Aunt, Florence, gave it to my father. I've loved it my whole life, and have always been enchanted with the wonderful colours of the enamel. Thanks to Sharon for sending me the Gien web site, I've discovered so much about my favourite vase! It was manufactured between 1930 and 1967.

XJF311217 Battle between a Rider and a Dragon, c.1482 (stylus underdrawing, pen and brush on paper) by Vinci, Leonardo da (1452-1519); 13.9x19 cm; British Museum, London, UK; Italian, out of copyright

The Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto is adorned with a multitude of charming fox statues, paying homage to the revered Inari deity, the guardian of rice, fertility, and prosperity in Japanese folklore. These foxes, known as "Kitsune," stand as iconic symbols representing divine messengers and magical creatures.

Positioned throughout the shrine grounds, these statues captivate visitors with their mischievous expressions and elegant poses. Crafted with exquisite detail, the foxes often hold a symbolic key or a jewel in their mouths, signifying their roles as guardians and carriers of spiritual energy.

Each fox statue evokes a sense of wonder, inviting contemplation about the shrine's rich mythology and cultural significance. These enchanting figures not only enhance the shrine's allure but also contribute to the spiritual ambiance and mystical charm that envelops the sacred grounds of Fushimi Inari.

A gala display of chrysanthemums with blooms of myriad colors, shapes and sizes provide an explosive finale to the variety of flowers that have been enjoyed during the three growing seasons here in New England.

This annual show that is held at Smith College's Lyman Conservatory in Northampton, Massachusetts, goes on this year for two weeks from Nov 1 through Nov 16. The theme this year focuses on dragons and other mythical creatures.

One of the top attractions of the show are the cascading mums that grow downward on trellises along one wall of one of the two adjoining greenhouses that house the show.
