An investigation into originality, appropriation, influence and plagiarism in contemporary graphic design. The final piece is a poster adapted from a billboard design by Jonathan Hitchen which read 'It’s too late. You’re already involved'. This outcome was chosen to illustrate my findings; that it is becoming more and more difficult to have truly original ideas – designers cannot create in a vacuum and influence and inspiration comes from the world around us. Heller and Ilic point out that 'all contemporary design can be broken down into its many elements and traced back to someone else who used it first. But in its totality the end result is original'. And as Paul Arden said: “It’s not where it comes from, it’s where you take it to.”
