My MXR M169 CARBON COPY ANALOG DELAY PEDAL!

The MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay features an entirely analog audio path, delivering rich, warm delay using old-school bucket brigade technology. The Carbon Copy boasts 600ms of delay time, with optional modulation via a top-mounted switch, and its simple three-knob layout gives you complete control over Delay Time, Mix (dry/wet blend), and Regeneration (delay repeats) - all in one incredibly compact pedal! For even more tonal options, you can also adjust width and rate control of the modulation via two internal trim pots. Giving you everything from crisp "bathroom" slap echoes to epic delays, all with the simple twist of a knob, stage-worthy blue LEDs and 9-volt operation round out this MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay!

Out of the box, this baby oozes great tone, and creates warm, silky-smooth repeats as you’d expect from an analog and importantly it doesn’t turn your tone overly dark as analog delays are apt to do. The Mod button adds a cool and super-subtle modulation similar to chorus, to smooth out the tone even more.

Kustom '36 Coupe 40th Anniversary (only 40 made) with 2x10's. I prefer this over the 1x12 also available

Epiphone 4x12 cabinet loaded with Eminence 50w. I used to use this with my So-Cal 50 head but now just use it in conjunction with the Kustom @ 8-ohms. Works awesome and sounds killer.

My pedals are simple and straightforward, but I don't think it will be like that for long. I have a lot of ideas for new stuff I want.

Chain goes Guitar --> Vox V847 Wah --> MXR Distortion III --> MXR Phase 90 ---> 36 Coupe.

And then I've got the footswitch for the amp which controls switching between the 2 channels, reverb on/off, and a boost which is set on the back of the amp up to 10db of boost I believe. Love that feature

Modified Dunlop/MXR Phase 90.

Bottom left corner is an Aion clone of the old MXR Distortion+. That's the Randy Rhoads/Jerry Garcia pedal. Two guys you always imagine playing together. See how it has two IC sockets? It can either run a vintage LM741 like I've got in it right now or you can remove that IC and put a modern dual op-amp like a Burr-Brown OPA2604 in the other socket. Right now I've got a vintage Motorola LM741 in there because I want to know how it behaved in the early 70's. Unless there's a compelling case for leaving that in, it will probably end up with the Burr-Brown.

To the right of that is the Aion clone of the Pearl OD-05 overdrive with Parametric EQ. I have very high hopes for this pedal. It has a soft-clipping circuit and the parametric EQ should really allow a lot of voicing options here.

Finally in the back is a GuitarPCB Angry Red Camel. It's a Red Llama clone with a booster added. Chances are this circuit really doesn't need a booster, but I wanted to try their take on it. The plain old Red Llama 2-knob layout is probably fine. Like my Rat clone. The four-knob thing was OK, but the one I'm currently building is back to the three-knob design because that fourth knob didn't take the circuit anywhere it really needed to go.

I'm very curious about all these circuits.

Update: The OPA2604 is perfect for the Distortion+. Amazing pairing. All the extra gain completely changes the sound for the better. Extremely low noise, as opposed to the LM741.

The Pearl was cool, but not quite my cup of tea.

I didn't care for the Angry Red Camel. Too angry.

Well, here's something I always wanted to try. This is an Aion Electronics MXR Distortion+ build. Randy Rhoads used one and Jerry Garcia used one, so I always had some curiosity about the circuit.

The Aion build adds switches that allow you to switch between two different diode clipping choices (one with soft-clipping resistance) or lift the diodes entirely in the middle position. It also has a switch to change the input capacitor for more or less compression. Finally, it has a switch to select how much post-distortion high-frequency cut there will be. Oh, and it also has two sockets so you can swap out the old single op-amp for half of a modern dual op-amp.

So I built this with a vintage Motorola LM741 so with the switches in their, just-like-the-original positions it would sound as close to the old ones as possible. Just so I'd know what they sounded like, 'cause I never owned one.

This is an odd little pedal. It has no Tone control. It gets brighter the higher you set the gain, though. So the distortion control is also kind of the Tone control.

It's...eh...it's a little primitive. Or maybe I'm just being overly harsh, but it kinda did what I expected it to do. It's got that kind of early overdrive sound. A little flat until you really crank it up and then it gets kind of bright and unruly. Not as noisy as I expected.

So then I pulled out the vintage LM741 and put in a Burr-Brown OP275. That kind of livened it up. It seemed to want to accentuate harmonics better and it had a little more touch sensitivity, or at least it seemed to. Maybe. If I'm not hallucinating. Still kinda sounded like the same thing, though. Curiously, it had about the same amount of noise even with the modern op-amp. I ended up putting the LM741 back into it.

I can't decide if I'm going to keep this and see if it grows on me or just list it. I'm glad I built it, though. As always, the board was very nicely done by Aion.

The MXR had to be repaired. You see one cable is loose, it was not the only issue. Gave it back to my brother to whom it belongs.
