Sounds amazing, but it's completely unportable. also the greatest name for an effects unit ever. The best thing was that it was a steal.
I started calibrating the Mutron that I build yesterday so I could ship it out tomorrow and the volume was cutting in and out. Finally the signal cut out completely and the LED went dark, which usually means something is grounding out. Yeah, the volume pot fell apart. WTF? The quality of most electronic components anymore is just abyssal. Probably because almost nothing is designed to be repaired anymore. Everything is designed to be replaced, so the market for electronics components has evaporated other than hobbyists. Don't get me started on Planned Obsolescence and our landfill culture.
So...uh...it's gonna be another day on this Mutron. I'm too annoyed right now to hold a soldering iron. Remember those old Whack-A-Mole arcade games? I need one of those for times like these. So Looney Tunes. "I'm gonna grab me a mallet and pound on those moles!!!"
Here is an awesome wah I built, it is basically a multiple op-amp biquadratic filter with a selector switch for the range and a pot for resonance. I can take it from subtle filtering to full out oscillation. It operates from sub octave range to about the middle of a guitar spectrum. I use it for super cool bass sweeping, it rattles everything in the house, even at low volumes. It reminds me of a MuTron filter pedal, only a tad bit better in my opinion.
Back in the day I came up with pictograms for a lot of control functions for my pedals. Loosely inspired by Ron Cobb’s “Standard Semiotic” symbols from Alien in ‘79. People hated them. Asked me how to remove them from pedals. Well, the Mutron clone I built last night is for me, so I dug out the stuff and glued a set to cabochons.
The Bare Box 2 just got here from Small Bear Electronics. Very nice size. I thought it was going to be more Mutron-sized, but it's actually pretty compact while still bigger and more useful than the original. I've got it sitting next to a powder-coated Bare Box 1 to make it easier to compare the sizes. The Bare Box 1 is similar in size to a Boss or Ibanez pedal.
Musitronics Mu-Tron ( Mutron ) II Phaser. It is highly regarded as the greatest phase shifter of all time, using high quality opto-photocouplers to ensure a high-quality signal weaving through the phase. It even silences other effects in your signal chain. If you havn't heard a Mu Tron II or Bi-Phase yet, your in for a treat. It can do everything from Ernie Isley's "Whose that Lady" to the lush sounds of Robin Trower, even the freaky modulations of Frank Zappa. The latter of the two publicly commended it's quality and versatility.
Yeah, I had to go ahead and finish up this Mutron build, too. Sounds awesome. This is the Madbean PCB. Strange build, since it uses 1/8-watt resistors, but it's a really amazingly good clone.
Someone asked me to build a double envelope follower. He wants each pickup from his bass to go into a different envelope follower. Which is cool. I remember at one point in the 70's Bootsy had three Mutrons running off the three pickups in his Star bass. Won't be long now.
I was discussing this pedal with someone today and I figured that since I dug out a photo, I might as well share it. This is one of the many things I sold to come up with money to start my little company. I had it for decades, though. Cool optical "Phasor."
