Wanted to shoot this from a very long time now .. though I have shot 2 pics of this same lane during the evening and night of Ramadhan month from this very spot and same angle but never got a chance to shoot friday prayer. Shot from the Kutbe - Kokan Maqdoom Ali Mahimi Flyover.

The monsoon can make anyone a Mumbaikar in one fell swoop. The water level rose, but differences of hearts couldn’t rise above the grounds. All the marks of hatred drowned, and the fear survived. In the time of crisis, no one was Marathi, no one was Hindu, no one was Muslim. Left were mere humans clutching their umbrellas, still all soaked. Humans who asked for help, and humans who could protect them. Someday, the wool will fall, the rain will stop, and everything will be fine. When that day comes, just one thing must be done: preserve the moisture provided by rain.

Dear friends and colleagues from Flickr.

This is the 6th in the series on the city of Mumbai.

It was not easy shooting these pics from the height I have shot.

Physical risk was involved while shooting this series on Mumbai Skyline.

To say the least, there was no such thing called 'Terrace' or a flat surface area from where I could shoot, there were just small square pillars in the name of terrace of say 20 inches by 20 inches space from which i had to balance myself, aim, shoot and then jump from one pillar to another to move from one corner to another to shoot all the sides of the city.

On top of it there was a lot of wind from all sides, a slight mis - balance on those square pillars while shooting and I would have been thrown 2 floors down.

So risk taken, enjoyed.

It was also my dream to shoot South Mumbai from this height and I am proud of this achievement.

I, thank my friend Javed Mulla for helping me to get access on this location.

Without his contacts, this location and this series wouldn't have been possible.

So friends lets me know what you think of these series.

The Rajabai Tower is a clock tower in South Mumbai, India. It is located in the confines of the Fort campus of the University of Mumbai. The tower stands at a height of 85 m (280 ft). Coordinates: 18°55′46.71″N, 72°49′47.95″E.

The Rajabai tower was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, an English architect. It was modelled on Big Ben, the clock tower of the UK houses of Parliament in London.

The foundation stone was laid on March 1, 1869 and construction was completed in November 1878. The total cost of construction came to Rs. 2 lakhs (Rs. 200,000), a princely sum in those days. This entire cost was defrayed by Premchand Roychand, a prosperous broker who founded the Bombay Stock Exchange on the condition that the tower be named after his mother Rajabai.

Premchand Roychand's mother was blind and as a staunch follower of Jain religion she was supposed to consume her dinner before evening. The evening bell of the tower helped her to know the time without anyone's help.

The Bombay Stock Exchange Limited or BSE is the oldest stock exchange in Asia. It is also the biggest stock exchange in the world in terms of listed companies with 4,800 listed companies as of August 2007. It is located at Dalal Street, Mumbai, India.

This picture was shot two years back outside my old workplace at Bandra , and if you see Marziya you see the passion of a street photographer even without a camera and I never even now ever considered the camera an instrument that takes pictures , Marziya shot the Awakener without the camera..

The Awakeners are Muslim beggars but during Ramzan they do this additional service of waking people for the Holy Fast..a superlative service for those poor needy living in the slums tenements in narrow dingy lanes and pigeon holed cubicles.

I must also add that it is not necessary all those who do this sublime job are beggars there are those who do it voluntarily as service to Muslim society, they get paid on Thursdays or on the eve of Ramzan Eid .. people give them generously I also give them as their contribution is immense and they are the beauty of Ramzan..

Their greatest enemy are the stray dogs that hate strangers waking them up from their sleep so they charge at these Awakeners , but the stick in their hands keeps evil canine intentions at bay.

Most of the hafiz kazi lower level Koran teachers of kids , are totally occupied during Ramzan , housing societies invite them to lead the namaz and take care of the roza proceedings.

As I am barefeet and not heavily decked I go to town and break fast with the beggar community , it is a moment snatched from a moment in eternity and I am crying as I write this their frugality hits me hard and not to belittle them , I hand them quietly some money after I have broken my fast.. for me this is the poetic life lasting moment in Islam and as Ramzan.

And I have in all humility captured Ramzan through a poets eyes , human eyes shown you places where angels dare to tread and I might if possible go to Lucky Compund at Byculla to break fast with the hijras..

Of late because of the advent of Ramzan and other personal reasons of pain I kept the hijra profile of my blogs on low key, but here I must add my dear friend Khushi the prettiest most beautiful transgender in the world , sends me her Ramzan message , and keeps all the fast she is a Namazi , she does charity and for me she is a devout Muslim..

I am not God to judge anyone for their life's chosen path, I know of hijra prostitutes in the red light area that stop their business for a month to be one with God.. and this is what I try to show with or without pictures as the humanity of a blog.

And those dear Hindu friends who fast along with us..their support solidifies my own faith , and the messages I received from all of them I bow my head and thank them.

And today is my first fast , and it is the first fast of all us Mumbaikars and it is a great start a great dawn of hope harmony brotherhood..

And I add words of my dear friend Hassan Shirazi he just sent them in my inbox at Facebook

Hassan S Shirazi

Firoze bhai - i tell my sons and even posted here - Pehle Insaan ban phir ban jaa Muslamaan - kya pata neik amal tuje Ek Momin banaa de ... we need to be human first - no hindu no muslim - only humanity then later muslim and who know how sinful we are as to become a MOMIN - sirf shia bolne se shia nahi banta hai - aur Imam Ali (AS) is not ameer ul Shia - but Ameer Ul Momineen .... Prophet (PBUH) came as rehmat ul Aleemeem not for sunni nor shia nor for wahabbis - Islam came for sake of Humanity then those who followed it are Muslim - height to reach the peak is MOMIN

Jazakallah.

I thank my dear friend Imran Patel to have given access to his lovely house facing the Dargah to shoot this visual.

Yes dont look surprised I wore my slippers this time , it was raining and I dont carry an umbrella or a raincoat nor any protection for my camera , I take my chances with nature as I take my chances with God..he loves to be photographed too and he knows all the top guns of photo journalism will be shooting the big Ganpatis at Dadar Juhu, so he beckons this Mumbai blogger to shoot the soul of grassroot divinity.

Divinity that spreads its wings through chants Siya Ram Siya Ram at every street corner ..

Ganesha is the soul and cornerstone of the Marathi Manoos.. Ganesha is Mee Mumbaikar No1.

And guarding him his devotees well wishers fans are the selfless Mumbai Police..

They are their at almost every road that leads towards the beach where Ganpatis is immersed..they are polite considerate above all they are human like you and me..and not monsters as certain section of media and the film industry portrays them to be..

There are bad eggs in every basket so why paint the entire force with a bad brush..

The Mumbai Police is one of the best task force ready at all time and in all emergency ..the government should upgrade their lot , good pay good accommodation , good schooling for their kids.. and make the force the envy of the entire world..

Political dependence has destroyed the very essence of the soul of the Police Man..'

Though they catch me assuming that I am a terrorist though I carry a Press Card , I hold nothing against their security stricture , only that a man who places a bomb would definitely not be dressed like me..

Besides its time the Mumbai Cyber Space cops told their counterparts that Photo bloggers too contribute to the good of society..

Much better than Photo journalists with borrowed cameras and borrowed egos...

Today was my first fast of Ramadhan, I was awake all night yesterday ,. as Ramzan is a moment with its own uniqueness..I had spoken to Raju Langewal the Pandal committee member, that I wanted to shoot the Raja , he told me to come by 12 pm...today.

So barefeet I hopped into a cab and reached the pandal at Lalbagh , I was carrying my Bandra Samachar Press Card too..

I shot the Raja extensively , my efforts to shoot on the stage were unfulfilled..but I will some day.

Lalbagh Cha Raja for the Hindus and Ramzan for the Muslims as a Mumbaikar are two heartbeats of a single heart.

The Raja touches everyone, there were Sikhs , Parsis Gujratis all standing for hours in the queues , some had stood all night, some had walked from the suburbs barefeet..but the most enduring were the kids with excitement and smiles on their faces and senior citizens too..

And it had rained generously , but the rains did not dampen the spirits of the lovers of Lalbagh Cha Raja..He is the Ultimate , he is Lord who removes Obstacles , He removes Ignorance , he is the Lord of Sweet Success and Poetic Prosperity.

I have just broken my fast as I write this ..I came home not before shooting Ganesh Gully ka Raja and the Tejukaya Ganesha, also sharing space with Lalbagh Cha Raja within walking distance from each other.

On my way towards Dadar TT..I saw the Dharavi ka Raja patronized by the Tamil migrants of Mumbai, going on a bullock cart , he had already gone a long distant , I jumped out of my cab and ran after him, I shot pictures of him..

So this is my tribute as a blogger to those who cant make it to the Pandal for some reason or the other , they can have a darshan through my pictures shot with a passion and devotion bound to humility.

I also remember my photo guru Prof BW Jatkar who passed away recently ..I hope Lalbagh Cha Raja grants his soul eternal peace ..the Professor was a devotee of the Raja.

This is a part of my series on Hope and Hindutva a message of Peace.

Situated on a quiet hillock in suburban Bandra, Mount Mary is probably Mumbai's best-known church for Christians and non-christians alike. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to the Mother of Christ and in September, the festival of the Virgin Mother culminates in a week long fair, popularly known as Bandra Fair, that has all the excitement of a small carnival. Stalls sell sticky Goan sweets and wax idols of the Virgin along with an assortment of candles shaped like hands, feet and various other parts of the body. The sick and suffering choose one that corresponds to their ailment and light it in Church, with the pious hope that Mother Mary will consider their appeals for help.

Kulapati K. M. Munshi founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1938 with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Bhavan is a unique institution where Sanskrit classes are found side-by-side with engineering colleges; Gita classes function along with the institute of management; traditional teaching of fine arts as well as the teaching of modern science, arts and commerce is found in its schools and colleges.

30 June 2007

A surprise for loved ones with soothing environment.

The advent of the monsoon is a time for celebrations in Mumbai. The city is on edge as summer draws to a close -- the air is insufferably humid and life becomes stifling. But by around June 10, the heavens open up. Then, Mumbai exhales.

It rains for the next three months. The incessant showers bring their own share of woes for the Mumbaikars. But that is another story.

Blood flew in the iconic locations of Mumbai on 26/11 exactly ten years back. 172 Mumbaikars lost their lives in one more dastardly spineless attack by our terrorist neighbors. The Indian Tricolor furls proudly over the resilient & strong Mumbai skyline on a misty Sunday, a day before 26/11/18.

Respect & homage to the martyrs. Om Shanti.

This is Secret.

I found her walking with her hooded ilk around the back streets of Mumbai. Usually when I see a cadre of the enshrouded, they are accompanied by Muslim man that is glaring at almost everyone. This time there seemed to be no alpha around, so I asked her for her name. She looked at me and smiled (I think) and then looked furtively around to see if anyone was watching. I got the distinct impression that since I was a white oddity that actually spoke to her that she wanted to talk, but then thought better of it and made a slight bow before gliding away.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Marathi: छत्रपती शिवाजी टरमीनस), formerly Victoria Terminus, and better known by its abbreviation CST or Bombay VT) is an historic railway station which serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India[citation needed], and serves Central Railway trains terminating in Mumbai as well as the Mumbai suburban railway.

The station was designed by Frederick William Stevens, a consulting architect in 1887-1888, for the princely sum of 16.14 lakh rupees. Stevens earned the commission to construct the station after a masterpiece water colour sketch by draughts man Axel Herman. After earning the commission, Stevens went on a ten-month trip to Europe to make a detailed study of the stations there. The final design bears some resemblance to St. Pancras station in London[citation needed]. It took ten years to complete and was named "Victoria Terminus" in honor of the reigning Queen Victoria.

In 1996, the station was renamed by the state government after Chhatrapati Shivaji, a famed 17th century Maratha king.

On July 2, 2004 the station was nominated a World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO.

Aamchi Mumbai fascinates you with its stunning sights and also the various accompanying smells. The visual contrast of the old & the new is distinct & is highlighted in the olfactory inputs that an outsider, a non mumbaikar's nose senses immediately.

The Dhobi Talao washing kundis smell of Chlorine emanating from the Bleaching Powder, whereas the seashore air reeks of Amines & Salt, thanks to the rotting fish. Travel in the local train & the hard working sweat hits your nose very much unlike the husky fragrance of a woman walking by at Aer, the Terrace Lounge on the 34th floor of Four Seasons Hotel. The old city amidst its heritage architecture has another distinctly unpleasant odor of decaying dead pigeon & rats whereas the Bandra region stinks of Hydrogen Sulfide laden untreated sewage ending up in the sea.

One exception to the above stenches is the food of Mumbai - it never smells bad but actually has a divine aroma & is worth a visit only for the gastronomical delights that the city offers.

November 26, 2008: Mumbai fell victim to one of the worst terrorist attacks, killing up to 166 people. The image of the front dome of the Taj Mahal Palace hotel encapsulated with a large plume of smoke is one that is etched into the memory of every Mumbaikar. The iconic symbol of opulence in Mumbai lay under siege for more than 60 hours at the mercy of four heavily armed terrorists, that made Taj the face of 26/11 attacks

Founded in 1890, close to 800 dhobis and their families live and work in Mumbai's Mahalakshmi Dhobi Ghat.

The day I visited the place, Mumbai was in festive mood of Ganesh Visarjan and with bakreid around the corner, it was double treat for most of Mumbaikars with couple of days off.

But the dhobis at ghat informed me how they had to attend to constantly flowing collection of soiled clothing shipped from most of Mumbai’s major hotels, hospitals and garment factories. Only day, they say, they take off is during Holi festival.
