Microsoft setup one of their new products, the Surface for attendees to have a play with. More interestingly, there was another demonstration on the same stand showing how you could create your own multi-touch interface (minus the screen) by using just an empty box, some tracing paper and a regular webcam. Genius!

Hi, my name is Julianna from Dan O'Brien Nissan in Chelmsford and this is the 2020 Nissan Altima S.
Nissan takes safety seriously! From passive features - like this under hood plastic tab that is designed to melt at high heat and allow the under hood sound insulation to drop down and smother a fire, in the remote case of an engine compartment fire. Simple but smart.
And the crumple zones in the body panels designed to crumple and fold and absorb the impact of an accident… so you don’t have to. Giving the Altima a government safety rating of 5 stars in the Overall Vehicle Score.
To actively watching out for you and your occupants with Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, and Automatic Emergency Braking, To help prevent accidents from ever happening.
Just a few of the many safety features to keep you and your family safe.
This Altima S is equipped with Comfort & Convenience features you would expect in a luxury car.
From the remote engine start and push button start, to the multi-touch 8” color display featuring Apple CarPlay and Android auto. This Altima has the technological features that are practical and entertaining.
The 2000’s were all about cup-holders. Now its connectivity, and this Altima has you connected. With dual illuminated USB ports with auxiliary and 12 volts power in front, and USB connections for the rear occupants.
With convenient controls on your steering wheel for the audio system, and hands free calling, as well as cruise control.
Comfortable seating for 5, and an 8-way power driver seat, with ample room for adult rear passengers. And a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, conveniently activated by an easy pull in the trunk. Turning this 5 seater sedan into a 4, 3, or 2 seater with room - like a small pick-up for those weekend home improvement runs.
If you want to take a closer look at this vehicle or come on test drive my name is Julianna Dan O'Brien Nissan on 95 Drum Hill Road in Chelmsford.
A surface shot of a Yahoo! Maps and Flickr mashup built for a multitouch table exhibit. The exhibit opens in early March at Vulcan Park and Museum in Birmingham, Alabama. The images can be resized and rotated with gestures. The "orb" controller changes the map view and can be positioned and orientated anywhere on the map. You can learn more about this multitouch mapping application on our portfolio site.
There is more about the multitouch table and the project on the Ideum website. You might also be interested in our Multi-Touch directory and aggregator site, Multitouch Blogs .
The theme of the evening was "tactile" and it featured several Digital Design students and grads presenting their projects. Alex Beim, CEO/Creative Director from Tangible Interactions presented a special talk about projects that are both multi-touch in their behaviour and "touching" in the way they connect with audiences.

Part six of my iPod collecting adventure arrived this week in the form of the iPod Nano 6th Generation 8GB which I was lucky enough to receive as an early birthday present this week. It was purchased from the new Covent Garden Apple Store which was an incredible retail environment that has been lovingly restored and provided a great place to show off all of the new Apple designs.
Once I was dragged away from the 11.6" MacBook Air (kicking and screaming) I eventually decided on the 8GB Nano, for me to try to use as a watch, but mainly to be used when running. The hardware is amazingly small, so small that it really takes you by surprise when you see it in the flesh for the first time. The multi-touch display, although small, is amazingly responsive and the whole experience is brilliant.
I will be writing a full review for my personal blog at jonhume.co.uk but for now enjoy the unboxing photos.

The project takes as a starting point Brussels’ 145 m high Dexia Tower, from which 4200 windows can be individually colour-enlightened, by RGB-led bars, turning the façade into an immense display.
Instead of considering this infrastructure as a flat screen (surface) displaying pre-rendered video loops, the project is working on the architectural characteristics of the tower and its urban context. The characteristics of the building; orientation, volume, scale... are used as parameters to set up a spatial, temporal and luminous concept, which moreover allows people to directly interact with the tower.
On Place Rogier, at the bottom of the tower, a station is mounted where people can interact either individually or collectively with the visual and luminous display (= the tower) through a multi touch screen. Both static (touch) as dynamic input (gesture) is recognized to generate an elementary graphical language of points, lines and surfaces combined with physical behaviours (growth, weight, ...) taking a monochromatic colour palette (background) combined with black and white (graphical elements).
Once a composition is created, it can be sent as an electronic postcard with a snapshot from the tower, taken from a distant location. It is also uploaded on the specific project website ( www.dexia-tower.com ) where people can retrieve their postcard, as electronic and printable format, with Christmas and New Year’s wishes from Brussels.

My Apple Extended Keyboard II and Magic Trackpad.
Essentially an update to this photo from 2008, which showed a previous AEK2 (yes, I have several) with a Kensington Expert Mouse.
Lion motivated me to switch from a trackball to a trackpad, even on my desktop, in order to be able to use the new multi-touch gestures, mainly the four-finger swipes.
The overlay on the keyboard was made using one of my own applications.

A few more links about stuff coming out in the next 5 years...
Pico Projectors for 3D, displays that require no glasses, and Apple developing multi-touch 3D interfaces? (Speaking of whom, HTML5 anyone? Screw Flash!)
Perry Hoberman, the guy who taught the 2 week workshop, showed us a Max patch he was developing for processing of stereo video, and now that Max upgrades are bundled with Jitter, which you used to have to buy as an add-on (if that tells you what digital is doing to the image processing field...), I was hoping to take a Max workshop this summer. Unfortunately, the affordable one specifically for beginners offered by Cycling '74 in LA is during my Yellowstone trip. Argh. Maybe I should just start with the tutorials. I'm usually terrible at learning this sort of thing with actual instruction though... erg. Time to man up and start paying attention to the Cycling forums too perhaps.
For still, it's fairly simple to make PS actions that allow you to generate anaglyphs or turn 2D images into a janky 3D, but hell, since Max is so much more powerful and freeform, I thought this would be a good excuse to learn it. It's got so much more potential for art-making in general, especially if you like interactive stuff. I figure this is a good excuse to get my brain thinking more deeply in tech and problem solving. Lately I can feel the gears jamming up whenever I tackle certain subjects...
