LNM34 is the sole train that still uses the former M&STL line south of Marshalltown, Iowa, and man is it a good one
Spotted on the stub track at Winthrop Jct. is a set of 3 ballast cars. The history of these cars is evident on the sides of MRX5. Remarkably this car is still in its original paint for Minneapolis & St. Louis, with added clues to it's service on the C&NW and the Nebkota Railway. Built in the '50s these cars have over 63 years under their belts. MRX6 and MRX7 were repainted by C&NW at some point. Mineral Range doesn't have a lot of its own rolling stock so seeing Mineral Range cars is interesting on its own, even more so when a few fallen flags are part of the story. June 3, 2022.
Iowa River Railroad Power is gettig ready for there day at the Pine Lake Ethanol Plant south of Ackley, IA. IRR runs the old MSTL from the plant to Ackley...a remanet of the old MTSL
on the former MStL Cedar Lake Subdivision was the 10 MPH Minnesota River crossing at Carver. The afternoon was usually good for Number 702 seen here on September 7, 1983 with CNW 4631 - 4608 - 6645 headed for East Minneapolis.
WC 4508, a gp9r that traces its lineage all the way back to the MStL gingerly drags a set of ballast hoppers over the recently recently disturbed roadbed prior to tamping. Decades of dirt and debris has been cleaned out and is laying adjacent to the main in preparation for the inauguration of Metra’s North Central Service in August of 1996. This train rocked and rolled to a severe degree, scraping the plow and pilot on the railhead as it tip toed along. In another 20 years I’d be hogging trains for CN along this same line where I grew up. Funny how things work...
Expecting the 261, I instead managed to catch the westbound Twin Cities & Western RR Saturday job at Lyndale Jct on the BNSF Wayzata Subdivision. September 2019
Black River & Western RS-3 204 rests in the dead line at Ringoes. The large bell mounted on the long hood end of this unit is a sign of it's M&St.L heritage. This unit apparently never received any BR&W lettering, but simply carried the number "204". It came to the BR&W via Canada's Sydney & Louisburg (later Devco Railway). I believe it was scrapped a short while after this photo was taken.

Minneapolis & Saint Louis Railway GE-29 near Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 20, 1957, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. The location is somewhat speculative because the slide is marked MINN. Number GE-29 was built in 1931, body by Saint Louis Car Company (c/n 1550), the power plant was 400 horsepower EMC Winton Model 148 gasoline engine (c/n 491) coupled to GE electrical gear. This unit went by the name 'Montgomery', painted over the rear truck, and was repowered in August 1950 with a Caterpillar 400 horsepower Model D diesel.

was the southbound CNW road freight on the former MStL Albert Lea Subdivision. On January 29, 1980 it was still possible to catch an occasional EMD F on the train seen here with 211 - 4351 - 318 - 4524 at Hartland, MN just 12.7 miles north of Albert Lea and a crew change. Brings back dreams of MStL crackshot Number 20 to the Peoria Gateway.
Here we are at North Western's Cedar Lake Yard in Minneapolis, formerly M&StL. The 1037, a Baldwin VO1000 switcher rebuilt by EMD in February of 1957 with a 12-567 rated at 1000HP, is handling a string of cabooses including 11035 and 11182, the other two I cannot make out, of two different designs. Also noteworthy is the standard 40' box with yellow lettering, a Clinton rebuild of 7-66. As is the case with many of my shots of this era - everything is gone except for a single track through here used by the TC&W. October 21 1970.
Minneapolis & Saint Louis X-1 ( I think ) at North Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was stenciled: DO NOT SEPERATE (sic ) FROM SCALE CAR and was coupled to C&NW Scale Test Car 263603.
AFT 4449 arrives into Perry, Iowa on the Milwaukee Road Iowa Division in September 1975. The train departed Sioux City and came down the MILW to Manilla then to Perry. Here it would back onto the CNW(MSTL) for the trip to its next stop in Des Moines. Thats Iowa Div Supt Bill Bannon in the grey suit. Bill Ohde photo.
This stretch of track has always been a fascination. I followed the former M&StL line in the early 2000s from Ackley to Marshalltown and wondered whatever would become of it. The short remaining span from Ackley to just north of Steamboat Rock still exists as the Iowa River Railroad to serve an ethanol plant with a pair of California Northern painted Geeps.
Late summer 78 found me in Waseca MN chasing Alco's on CNW. The ex M&StL line that crossed the Alco line here was home to some interesting power in its own right. F's and geeps were common. In this late evening view a eastbound has stopped south of the Alco line and a geep from the nearby yard is working the rear of the train. The crew took the opportunity to bail off and head to a nearby DQ for a quick ice cream cone.
An SD70ACe-T4 sits outside the Progress Rail Service-EMD facility at the former CNW-M&STL shops at Marshalltown, IA as the power for UP train LNM34-30, which includes an SP-painted GP60, prepares for a trip south to Eddyville, IA via the UP Oskaloosa Sub. 6/30/24.
Wade Murray has an outstanding collection of CGW, CNW, and MNS photos from in and around Randolph, MN. If you haven't checked out his Flickr stream, you definitely should.
In any event, one of Wade's slides, the top image above, got my attention, because it was a wonderfully composed shot of a train on a line that no longer existed. After a few comments were exchanged, I knew I had to find this location and photograph it as it appears today.
This is just south of Randolph, MN. As you can see, the track, trestle, grain elevator, and asphalt are all long gone - lots of change in last 35 to 40 years.
The Chicago Great Western, known at the time as the Chicago, St. Paul and Kansas City Railroad, laid (or possibly obtained through acquisition) this track in 1891, which formed its mainline between St. Paul and its hub in Oelwein, IA. It hosted CGW passenger trains with service between the Twin Cities and Chicago, Omaha and Kansas City. It remained part of the Great Western until it was merged into the Chicago and North Western in 1968.
The North Western made a habit out of obtaining redundant lines running south out of the Twin Cities. Their first southerly route was obtained by acquiring the MSTL in 1960. In 1968, they purchased the CGW (seen above). In order to gain access to Kansas City, they bought the former Rock Island Spine Line in 1980. Obviously it wasn't economical to maintain and operate three redundant routes, and, unfortunately for the scene here, the Spine Line was the winner. The former CGW above went out of service in 1982, the track came up in 1988.

Yes boys and girls, that is an original Minneapolis and St. Louis flat car on the UP at Jones Island in Milwaukee.
The sound of the two non-turbo geeps working up the hill was music to my ears. It was made even better by full sun for this shot. This was a wonderful chase, and great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with some fellow railfans.

After finishing their work at Merriam, LTU23 made its way towards Montgomery on the former Minneapolis and Saint Louis mainline. It was great to see a pair of GP15s together.
was the daily local workhorse on the former MStL Albert Lea Subdivision working the busy industries at new Prague and Montgomery. They also often had through traffic that went to Waseca. Late in the afternoon on May 13, 1981 with second hand geeps 4518 and 4345, the turn headed back north with the short revenue of the day. Where has all that traffic gone?
NS 6996 leads train 2-471 past the dismantled Minneapolis & St. Louis 2-8-0 Baldwin numbered 471 in downtown Janesville, MN. While I do not have specific details on this steam engine I had read that a restoration was planned.

Independence Building Supply is served by a spur next to their open-air lumber shed. The Clifton Hill turn set out a boxcar of fiberglass insulation overnight, and I'm sure the workers will want to unload this car before the afternoon heat makes unloading unbearable.

Looking west along the Rock Island (now Iowa Interstate) at its diamond with the old Minneapolis & St. Louis (later Chicago & North Western, now Union Pacific) at Grinnell Union Depot.
The depot was built in 1893 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It now houses the Depot Crossing Restaurant and Lounge.
Much better in lightbox! : )
Minneapolis & St. Louis 2-8-0 471 (Baldwin, 1910) has been moved from its longtime home at the Minnesota & Western Railroad Museum of Annandale, Minn., to Janesville, Minn. These photos were taken the day after delivery; the location is south of downtown Janesville alongside the DM&E. The new owner is reportedly Don Borneke Construction; a cosmetic restoration is planned.
