This photo shows how the left side foot board was pushed back and up by the impact. That was probably the cause of my broken hip. My femur was pushed through the socket in my hip and it took the combined efforts of three surgeons to pull it back through the hole and return it to the correct position. I was then left in traction for 4 days before having more surgery to screw, pin, bolt and wire all the broken bits back together. I hope the bones regenerate and knit together or its back into hospital for a complete hip replacement, socket and ball !
Well, there we were making our way down to Exmoor. A Damn Fine Woman was on the pillion and we were just cruising along a National Speed Limit A road, at 60mph, mid afternoon on a day with light traffic and good visibility. All that came to an end when a car driver failed to Give Way from a lane on our left and turned right across our path about 30m ahead of us ! The MP3 had large white front fairing panels, four forward facing lights and both of us were wearing yellow flourescent / reflective hi-viz waterproofs from head to toe as it had been raining earlier in the journey. Despite me positioning to the crown of the road and backing off the gas on the approach, to make it easier for the car driver to see us, it appears he didn't and we T-boned him still doing 40-50mph. Ouch !!! ADFW was thrown off the pillion seat and right over the top of the car, landing on the road at the far side. Miraculously she didn't break a single bone although she was bruised (and I do mean BRUISED) from head to toe. I landed on the impact side with the bike on my feet and suffered a broken hip and a cracked tibia plus some cuts and bruises. My chest and abdomen had been badly crushed, I was having serious difficulty breathing and I could taste blood at the back of my throat. Thankfully there was a paramedic on his way to work, in one of the cars behind us so we received expert medical help within seconds. He must have been worried about me though because he called for the Air Ambulance and the Police called it in as a potential fatal and kept the road closed while they did all the crash forensics. Fortunately no internal organs were ruptured, just heavily bruised, and my torso has recovered well. I spent three weeks in hospital, had two hip operations and may need at least one more but I hope to be walking again by Christmas. The car driver was uninjured and has been reported for Careless Driving Thank God for our armoured motorcycle suits which we were wearing under our hi-viz waterproofs; both of us could have been much more seriously injured without them. In 40 years of 24/7/365 motorcycling, doing up to 30,000 miles p.a. this is the first time I've been "unhorsed" in a collision with another vehicle and only the second time I've actually crashed so I guess I've been fortunate. There's old motorcyclists and there's bold motorcyclists, but there are no old bold motorcyclists. I'm 61 in a few days so I guess that makes be a very un-bold motorcyclist !!! lol.
May 12, 2008 - My old Sansa mp3 player gave up the ghost, but I bought the extended warranty from Best Buy, and they gave me full credit for my 1.5 year old unit. I was able to get a newer, smaller, more storage-er (8G) version with a new extended warranty and still have $17 left over.
What?! Not an iPod?! Hey, I love Rhapsody. Basically, I just rent all my music now. For the cost of a new CD each month, I have full access to their entire library (as complete as iTunes). I can stream it online, and can carry around 8Gigs of it with me all the time.
