Climbed Mt. Rainier with Karin!

Quote from my pal at the time I took this image of Mt Rainier the evening before climbing it. Turns out it can be plenty hard for two newbie climbers.

Late day hike Deadhorse Creek Trail Mount Rainier NP

Taken in 2007 with Nikon FM, extremely old Nikkor 105mm lens and unknown film. Its lost some of its detail in scanning, I feel, but the colours came through nicely.

Flickr compression makes this look way over sharpened (its better viewed full size)

at 1024 these look oversharpened, less so at 1080, don’t know why

dusky seattle landing

We began our snowshoe next to the Paradise Lodge (closed in the winter).

Had to toss in one more HDR shot of Mount Rainier with Myrtle Falls in the foreground. I like the lenticular cloud that forms on top of the mountain.

Mount Rainier from SR-706

So we'd gone to Mount Rainier to see the mountains. But it was all foggy and rainy and we didn't actually see Mount Rainier. However, we did see other awesome beautiful things and that made it worth the effort.

Expedition High Altitude Finch - John planned an overnight backpacking trip for us to Mount Rainier on July 3rd and 4th that he named Expedition High Altitude Finch (HAF) after hearing me talk about my desire to see the Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch, one of the highest-altitude breeding birds in North America. We camped at McClure Rock and had stunning views of Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, Mount Hood, and Mount St. Helens at both sunset and sunrise. On July 4th we took the Skyline Trail back to Paradise and had excellent views of several Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches. I was delighted by the sight of these elegant finches and awestruck by the power of the mountain.

Day 3, Wednesday August 15. We re-entered "civilization" today and stuck mostly to fairly busy but fairly flat US 12, which brought us through the towns of Randle and Packwood where we got provisions. Later in the day we entered Mount Rainier National Park where we set up camp at Ohanapecosh for the next two evenings.

Rainier is sometimes likened to a big ice cream cone.

The face of Rainier in this photo rises more than one mile vertically

"The present edifice is dominantly lava flows and breccias, 90 percent of which are composed of a petrographically uniform two-pyroxene andesite. [also] local hornblende andesites and welded and non-welded block and ash flows... Small amounts of basaltic andesite were erupted during the late Pleistocene from two satellite cones on the northwest flank of the mountain, Echo Rock and Observation Rock....Approximately 140 cubic km of lava has been erupted from Mount Rainier in the past 1 million years." - Pringle et al. in "Geologic Field Trips in the Pacific Northwest" 1994 edited by Swanson and Haugerud

This photo was taken along Skyline Trail in Mount Rainier National Park.

Throughout our two week trip in Washington state in mid August, we dealt with very hazy skies from the many wildfires burning in the West at that time. It definitely affected what we saw and breathed. For many of the photos I took, the haze often added an artsy character to the shots, but that was not always the case. In Mount Rainier NP, it actually hindered being able to see the grand mountain itself much of the time. To counteract that, I made frequent use of "haze reduction" in Photoshop. I used that feature in most of the landscape shots taken in the national park. As you can see in this photo, even use of haze reduction still left much to be desired in terms of seeing the mountain really well and in sharp, crisp detail.
