The de Havilland Tiger Moth is a 1930s British biplane designed by Geoffrey de Havilland and built by the de Havilland Aircraft Company. It was operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and other operators as a primary trainer aircraft. The Tiger Moth remained in service with the RAF until it was replaced by the de Havilland Chipmunk during the early 1950s. Many of the military surplus aircraft subsequently entered into civilian operation.

This year there are noticeably many butterflies and moths. I found this especially large one in the garden.

Finally - a moth to my garden trap, even if it's a lowly March Moth!

Mullein [Cucullia verbasci] - 73.058

LEPIDOPTERA > Noctuidae (Noctuids) > Cucullinae

The larval foodplants are various species of Mullein (Verbascum), but they also feed in gardens on Buddleia. This is a species that is far more likely to be seen in its larval (caterpillar) stage than as an adult moth, which have a very short flight period of April to May.

13th April 2024. One of two males to lure in the garden late afternoon. This is one of the UK's most impressive moths.

This pretty moth flew into the shed last week, attracted to the ceiling light. I took it outside, in case it decided to crawl towards the catnet.

I'm not using the ceiling light anymore for the cats at night, it attracts too many bugs and they may like the light, but it is not good for them. I've started using a small, not so bright little light for the cats at night, and it works fine enough for the kitties, and it attracts a lot less insects.

There were usually two or three of these in the trap each day at las Descargues.

Lot, Las Descargues, July 12th 2010.

One good thing about this location was that quite a few nocturnal moths were seen around our accommodation at dawn. It was a large block and moths were seen in numerous spots both inside and outside.

I have seen a few with this general look over the years. I like both the moth and the photo.
