The way into the forest cult.
Step lightly, you’ve crossed into something.
What started as a walk now feels like a ritual.
No signs, just markings. No people, just presence.
Whatever this is… I’ve entered it.

A breathtaking long-exposure capture of the Milky Way stretching above a dense pine forest. This image was taken on a clear night far from city lights, where the sky comes alive with stars and cosmic dust. The silhouette of towering trees against the luminous band of our galaxy creates a moment of pure natural awe. Perfectly still. Eternally vast.
Whether you're a fan of astrophotography, night sky adventures, or forest landscapes, this photo is a reminder of how small we are under the grandeur of the universe.
Just stumbled into a suspicious area in the woods.
Red markings. A perfect pile of sticks.
Either I joined a cult, or I'm starting one.
Eksyin epäilyttävälle alueelle metsässä.
Punaisia merkintöjä. Täydellinen puukasa.
Joko liityin kulttiin, tai perustin sellaisen itse.

I've passed through the stands of Birch at the former Bolehill Quarry many times, but this morning was my first time experiencing the other-worldly feeling of them enveloped in fog.
There is some real rhythm and flow to be found amongst the shapes and the near symmetry of this particular vignette caught my eye the most.

A moody forest scene where sunlight filters through tall, twisted trees, casting long, sculptural shadows on the mossy forest floor. The photograph balances darkness and light, with the play of shadows revealing more than they conceal. A moment suspended in the quiet breath of the woods mysterious, immersive, and deeply textured.
Atamasco Lily (Zephyranthes atamasca), also called Rain Lily. Moody Forest WMA, Appling County, Georgia.
Carolina Piriqueta (Piriqueta caroliniana), also called Pitted Stripeseed. It is often listed as Piriqueta cistoides ssp. caroliniana, meaning that it is now considered a subspecies of P. cistoides. To add to the confusion, Piriqueta is often listed as being in the family Turneraceae, but Turneraceae has now been incorporated into Passifloraceae. Moody Forest WMA, Appling County, Georgia.

Immerse yourself in the moody beauty of the forest with this captivating portrait of a dog standing amidst ferns, facing forward with a happy and relaxed expression. The dog’s gaze into the woods captures the sense of adventure and tranquility found in nature, making this image perfect for those who appreciate the harmonious bond between dogs and the wild.
Gopherweed (Baptisia lanceolata), a yellow-flowered species of Baptisia. Moody Forest WMA, Appling County, Georgia.
This mist-laden forest captures the fleeting moment between autumn’s final breath and winter’s quiet arrival. Golden larches stand alongside evergreens, their fading leaves a reminder of fall, while the encroaching fog hints at the cold stillness of winter. The complete silence in the air amplifies the sense of stillness, as the scene feels suspended in time—both transient and eternal. Duncan Rawlinson’s photograph beautifully conveys the timelessness of this transition, evoking a sense of quiet that stretches beyond the changing seasons.
Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana). In the wild I usually see this species growing in swampy locations in the coastal plain. Moody Forest WMA, Appling County, Georgia.
Dwarf Sundew (Drosera brevifolia). This is a tiny carnivorous plant. Moody Forest WMA, Appling County, Georgia.
Atamasco Lily (Zephyranthes atamasca), also called Rain Lily. Moody Forest WMA, Appling County, Georgia.
A species of Skullcap (Scutellaria sp.). Several rare species of Scutellaria have been reported in counties close to Appling County, but I doubt that this is one of the rare ones. Moody Forest WMA, Appling County, Georgia.
A red maple branch extends over the edge of a still lake in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, while gentle rain adds a subtle rhythm to the quiet shoreline. The rich reds and greens of the foliage reflect the calm and cool mood of the forest. This image by Duncan Rawlinson captures a serene moment shaped by rain, color, and texture in the Canadian wilderness.

A quiet, eerie stillness settles over a leaf-littered forest floor in Florence County, Wisconsin. Where tall, bare trees stretch into the mist. Captured on a foggy November morning, this photo evokes the peaceful solitude of late autumn — just before winter takes hold. The fog softens the background, creating a sense of depth and mystery in nature’s muted palette.
