You know, I just love West Virginia. It truly is Almost Heaven. And I just can't get enough of it. Every time I'm there I see the most beautiful things nature has to offer in unrelenting awesomeness. Take this scene for instance, as I drove down the road to Grandview in The New River Gorge I was watching a sunrise of epic proportions but as I pulled into the park it was clear that I was more than likely not going to be anything to shoot due to a thick fog. After standing at the Main Overlook disappointed and sad that I had arrived basically to shoot nothing, myself and good friend Jeff Burcher started to head back to the vehicles, but along the way we noticed there was something going on; an eerie light was cast upon the forest through the mist. For the next 20 minutes we shot the forest and the path and the benches, enjoying every second of it. It just goes to show you, that the cards you're always dealt aren't always what they seem, if you read between the lines.

I'm quite happy with the way this image came out, in spite of it displaying a forest plantation. The different layers and the overall balance is quite pleasing.

Silverbell Tree (Halesia sp.). Several species of Silverbell trees can be found in the southeastern US. This one seems to be Two-wing Silverbell (Halesia diptera). Moody Forest WMA, Appling County, Georgia.
An altogether darker expression of woodland during autumn than a lot of photos I've seen (and indeed taken) this season. This was the day that Storm Claudio had taken hold and after a morning of dramatic light and vibrant colours on Higger Tor, I headed into the woodland down in Burbage valley where day almost became night.
The dense pines and conifers created a thick canopy that selectively allowed the light in, creating small areas of highlight. This provided me the palette with which to shape a photograph that expresses the more intrinsic nature of autumn that lies behind the beguiling colours we see this time of year, that is our woodlands becoming dormant and a transition into darker months ahead.
My disclaimer here is that this I feel this crosses into the realm of digital art as the edit is quite heavy handed, I used a camera and resultant raw file as a vehicle to get me to a place (I'm a big pre-visualiser) rather than as a "true-to-life" representation (whatever that is) of the situation. That said it the vast majority of this edit is just dodging & burning and just goes to show how you can shape a photograph just by lightening and darkening features and areas selectively.
