The Schlossberg hill, the highest point of the village of Castell, takes its name from the original castle of the Counts Castell from the 12th century. Since 1266 the Schlossberg has been mentioned in documents as a vineyard and its wines are known for their quality and unique taste. The first Silvaner in Germany was planted here in 1659. On the far right of the picture you can see the court lime tree planted around 1200, where the high and blood court was meeting.

Simeria Arboritum, Hunedoara County, Romania

The oldest in Romania, covers 73 ha and opened in the 18th century in a natural forest to which more native and exotic species of trees were added in time. Today it contains 2100 systematic taxa from different zones of the globe. Some consider it the largest arboretum in the world.

The park is placed in the flood plain and on the secondary terrace of Mures River, at 200 m altitude. The climatic conditions are characterized by annual average temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius and 578 mm annual precipitations.

The natural vegetation consists of riparian forests (of Populus alba, Populus nigra and Salix alba), fragments of ancient elm forests (of Ulmus foliacea) and rare oak forests (Quercus robur). The park includes a collection of exotic trees and shrubs (conifers, magnolias, bamboos), some of them uniques in Romania (Abies pinsapo, Abies faxoniana, Torreya californica, Acer carpinifolium, Chionantus retusa, Styrax japonica, Vilburnum prunifolium, Quercus libani, Quercus glandulifera, Quercus troyana, etc). Most of the current species are of Asian origin (47%), North-American origin (25%), European origin (14%), the rest being from other continents. Simeria Arboritum (dendrological park), a natural reserve since 1995 was originally a park surrounding Gyulay (later Ocskay) Castle, built at the beginning of the 19th century. The castle became the property of Bela Fay after 1918. Bela Fay was a naturalist and a member of the Hungarian Science Academy. The Forest Research and Experiments Station in Simeria is opened here since 1954.

The dendrological park (73 ha) dates back to the 18th century and was enlarged between the years 1870 – 1880 with a series of plants originating from the Far East and from Northern America. There are currently over 2.165 species of plants and trees inside the park, one of the oldest, most valuable and picturesque collection of exotic and native trees and shrubs in Romania. The dendrological park was ranked third in Europe by the British Encyclopedia and eleventh on a global scale. www.ourheritage.ro/en/monuments/dendrological-park-2/

To stand under this magnificent atlas cedar tree is to know another world.

The figure standing in the shade, on the path to the right of the tree, gives you an idea of its size. The canopy and the cool air seem to descend upon you in that space.

In the Vizela Thermal Park, the sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) stands out, a species originating from the Sierra Nevada, California, which was introduced in Portugal in the 19th century, in a period marked by the appreciation of exotic botanical species. These trees can exceed 80 meters in height and live more than three thousand years, being appreciated for their robustness and longevity. The sequoia contrasts with the park's riparian vegetation, while contributing to the local botanical diversity and providing shade and landscape interest along the lake. In addition to this, the redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), also present in the space, is equally valued for its rapid growth and longevity, reflecting the botanical exchange between continents and the aesthetic appeal that monumental trees bring to the historic gardens of northern Portugal.

Trees whose size, shape, age, rarity, biological origin, beauty or presence in myths or traditions have led them to be classified and protected as monumental or unique trees.

All of them silently contribute to the fight against climate change. They are our allies and will play a vital role inside cities.

There are about five hundred monumental trees in the city of Valencia.

The Rotterdam General Cemetery in Crooswijk is a national monument. Until recently, one of the oldest and thickest trees in Rotterdam, a red beech, stood there. The tree was drilled in 1982 and it turned out to be 160 years old. It was cut down a few years ago, leaving a large stump overgrown with ivy. There is another red beech, probably planted at the same time. The cemetery was opened in 1832 and an extension based on Springer was realized in 1915. The old part has several beautiful trees and tree-lined avenues. At the entrance a plane tree avenue, a chestnut avenue of 50 year old chestnuts, a chestnut avenue with chestnuts of the Baumannii cultivar with very thick old chestnuts and a beautiful poplar avenue.

A living fossil

This tree was once one of the most widespread tree species in the Northern hemisphere (during the Tertiary period). Fossils have been found across the northern hemisphere, including Greenland and Spitzbergen, dating from when the continents were further south, and close together sharing a common flora.

In 1941 Shigeru Miki of Japan was reclassifying fossil remains that had been incorrectly classified as Sequoia and Taxodium[1]. Due to its resemblance to the North American coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), he named the tree species Metasequoia, which means "almost a sequoia, sequoia-ish". Botanists think this species is the ancestor of the present day coast redwood. To summarize: at that time, the tree was only known as an fossil tree species, extinct for millions of years.

In late autumn of 1947, T. Kan, a Chinese forester of Beijing National Central University, found three strange deciduous trees he had never seen before and during an expedition that followed, a lot of the trees were apparently still alive in a remote area in Southwest China[1].

In 1948 it was discovered that the species belonged to the already described fossil genus Metasequoia and, in an effort to preserve the tree species from logging, it was immediatly spread along arboreta everywhere in the world.
