The Langdon Family Monument, at the center of the Olivia Langdon's family burial plot, contains four religious symbols: Alpha and Omega; the symbol of trinity; the monogram meaning "In His Sign," and a former cross.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pen name Mark Twain was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced" and "the father of American literature". His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), The Prince and the Pauper (1881), and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889). Clemens died of a heart attack in his home in Connecticut and was buried in his his wife's family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, where the couple married, briefly lived, and often summered.
Olivia Langdon Clemens (November 27, 1845 – June 5, 1904) was Mark Twain's wife. An Elmira native, Livy helped her husband with the editing of his books, was a proponent of women's rights, and was one of the founders of the Hartford Art School, which later became the University of Hartford.
Woodlawn Cemetery was established on three 12-and-one-half-acre plots in Elmira, NY in 1858. It was expanded in 1874, 1899 and 1920 to approximately 184 acres.
