I think I have taken this photo with almost every camera I have. Including the Nikon F3, Pentax 6x7

Kodak Retina IIa, Nikkormat FTN And I think the Pentax KX. Also a multitude of different film. As the film get processed I’ll post them and ultimately post the series together.

I keep trying to get on film what I see driving past. Often there is an incredibly dramatic sky and I don’t have the time to stop. Eventually I’ll get what I’m looking for. Any of you ever shoot the same spot over and over and over again?

All images were shot using the Hasselblad 500v

Because the Hasselblad has an interchangeable back I decided to shoot two Kodak films. Kodak Portra 400 and Kodak Tri X 400 all on a tripod so the framing and lighting would be identical. Light meter readings were all done using the “Viewfinder “app. More on that later

I’m traditionally a black and white kinda guy but I may be exploring a bit more color after this experiment. Each post will have both version for comparison.

A year ago by Roustabout_photo

I posted this exactly one year ago today so my tablet tells me. It’s smarter and has a better memory than me and I guess I’m grateful.

However it isn’t smart enough to tell me where I shot this photo. Ok I accept there is this negative side to shooting film, that being film has no metadata with a time stamp and gps coordinates. Not normally a problem, I think but when this popped up today I thought I wonder how the trees are growing after that clear cut and thought it would be good to see and if there was a lot of growth I’d shoot it again and maybe start documenting the annual change. Alas that will have to be another project.

The first time I shot this film stock I thought it was too contrasty and the image’s were flat and I did not really like it very much. This time shooting it’s obvious the problem wasn’t the film… oh well. Let’s just call it progress and I will order more!!

antique stores, junk shops and flea markets.

I often find boxes of negatives, old slides, and photos like this that stands out and make me wonder about the person in the photo and their story.

Clearly this is a graduation photo of a young woman circa early 20th. century my guess ( feel free to weigh in on time frame). What did she do after graduation? Was she at the top of her class? Is she the oldest child, middle, youngest or only? Did she have a family? Children, grand children? What was her story? Did she live to a ripe old age? Was she one of the lucky ones that went on to university? Did she serve in WWII? Why was this lot of photos relegated to this fate?

As with most family photos, mine included, there are no names written on most of the snap shots and formal photos to know who the characters in my family past were. Mine is a large box, my partners is even larger. There is no one left of my parents generation let alone grandparents and aunts and uncles to ask. I am the only one in the family who cares about these old but obscure connections. There is a sense of comfort knowing that I’m here because of them and seemingly random circumstances of their lives that put me here.

Of course this poses the bigger discussion and question? Why do we take these photos knowing that unless somehow we become famous, that in a short period of time the images like ourselves will be relighted to obscurity, antique stores, junk shops, flea markets and dust. But there for a time will be some physical tangible proof of existence. What is the fate of the digital image if it’s never printed ? Will your image and sole live for eternity on the cloud inaccessible to everyone without a password or until the storage payments end? Does any of this really matter?
