Beijing Playhouse Academy of Performing Arts presents The Monkey King. The famous Chinese tale performed in English by children ages 6-13 on April 11, 2009.
Detail on one of the beams to be seen along the Painting Walkway, more commonly known as the Covered Walkway, which is one of the most important structures in the Summer Palace. It is also the longest walkway in the gardens. It is 728m long and it is divided into 273 sections.
On the beams and crossbeams of the walkway, there are altogether over 14,000 traditional Chinese paintings. Some of them are birds, flowers and landscapes, the others are from famous ancient poems, dramas or other literary classics, such as "Monkey King", "The Tales of Three Kingdoms", "The Dream of Red Mansion" and so on. Most of the stories here are regarded as the essentials of ancient Chinese classics. Visitors test themselves or their friends to see how much they know about Chinese history and literature while appreciating those figure paintings.
In the 1750s, Emperor Qianlong travelled to the South on six of his inspections, and so loved the beautiful scenery there that he asked the best painters to sketch them down and later he had them copied on the beams and crossbeams of the walkway. Even the Summer Palace itself was modelled after a famous garden in Suzhou, a garden city near modern-day Shanghai.
The original walkway was burnt down by Allies during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. The reconstruction was carried out by Emperor Guangxu later. There are four pavilions along the walkway, representing the four seasons of the year. They play an important role in the construction of the walkway which travels along the undulating terrace of the hillside. The pavilions were built on each of four promontories, thus helping add to the illusion of a single straight structure.
Utilising a typical Chinese gardening method, the walkway serves as a partition between the different landscapes offered by Kunming Lake on one side of it, and Longevity Hill on the other. In summer, the walkway provide a pleasant shade. Emperors and Empresses used to stroll along the walkway, enjoying the refreshing coolness and the beautiful scenery.

'Havoc in Heaven' 《闹天宫》(famously known as part of 'The Monkey King' story) is from the book 'Journey To The West' 西游记. This particular tale revolves around the Monkey King Sun Wukong 孙悟空齐天大圣, the self-proclaimed Great Sage The Equal of Heaven. One day, he becomes enraged because the Queen Mother does not invite him to the Festival of Immortal Peaches. He seeks revenge by eating and stealing all of the peaches 偷吃蟠桃as well as some wine and the golden elixir 御酒before returning to his domain of the Flower and Fruit Mountain花果山. Upon learning the Monkey King's transgression, the Celestial Emperor 玉皇大帝is very angry and he dispatches a troupe of celestial troop to capture the Monkey King but none of them is Sun Wukong's match.

The Mei Lanfang Beijing Opera Troupe 北京梅兰芳京剧团came to Vancouver and Victoria BC, Canada to showcase traditional Chinese Jingju 京剧(Peking opera) to oversea audiences. They performed at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Dec 22 and 23 for two evening shows of 'The Legend of Lady White Snake' 《白蛇传》. There is also be a 2PM matinee presentation of selected scenes from other Peking operas such as 'Farewell My Concubine'《霸王别姬》, 'Havoc in Heaven'《闹天宫》from the Monkey King story of Sun Wukong 孙悟空 and 'The Autumn River' on December 23 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Additional engagements include Dec 27 at the Molson Canadian Theatre at Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam for the performances of Crossroads 《三岔口》and Havoc in Heaven 《闹天宫》and on Dec 28 at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey for 'The Orphan of Zhao《赵氏孤儿》。The troupe then moves on to Victoria, BC to entertain audiences at the Royal Theatre for an evening performance of Lu Bu and Diao Chan《吕布与貂婵》on Jan 03, 2018。

Rama, the prince of Ayodya and his wife Sita are in the forest when Sita is taken by the demon king Rahwana. Sita is rescued by the monkey king Hanuman (the white monkey), but Hanuman gets caught in the act. As punishment for releasing Sita, Rahwana tries to burn Hanuman alive, but since the monkey king is magically powerful, he escapes.

Behold the power of the Monkey King and behold one of the famous characters in Asian mythology. A really interesting character build - Wukong from the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. This was the end result :)
This moc is a long time coming and now it is finally finished.
Short Bio
Sun Wukong is a main character in the classical Chinese epic novel Journey to the West. Sun Wukong was born from a mythical stone from the primal forces of chaos, located on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. Early in life he joined a clan of monkeys and became their leader by finding the Water Curtain Cave. After the other monkeys honored him as their king he realized despite his power over the monkeys he was still only mortal. So determined to find immortality he traveled to civilized lands where he became a discipline of a Taoist immortal. There he learned all of the powers commonly associated to him in mythology. Sun Wukong is a famous character in Asian mythology and culture often being referenced in anime, manga and literature.
I like history, mythology and Wukong is one of my favourite mythology characters (there are others I like too).
There are really quite a good amount of interesting interpretations of the Monkey on internet and other sources, but I haven't taken any exact design, rather tried to make my own version of the character from my mind with the elements that randomly came in my head at the building process. And the thing is that, every moc that I have built before was just something from my imagination with absolutely no connection to anything, this time it was different, even thought that I was trying to come up with my own design, I still had to make sure that it has a primate-ish feel of a monkey king.
I must say this was a really interesting project, I must say I'm quite happy how the moc turned out in the end, but I think this character has much more potential, so in the future I will definitely build a companion monkey for the same reason - it has potential.
Fun fact
Sun is my first moc that has been built mainly with lego pieces, yes there are a few bionicle and technic pieces also (usually all my mocs contains bionicle and technic pieces) so this was a really great and new building experience for me.

Monkey King - the star of "The Journey to the West", a Chinese folk epic from the sixteenth century. The Monkey King has been the favorite superhero in Chinese cullture for at least five centuries and is as quickly recognized in Chinese culture as are Bugs Bunny or Santa Claus by Americans.
He’s amazingly strong, he can fly, and he has a few tricks those other superheroes never heard of. And he’s always ready to do battle with demons, dragons—sometimes even the gods.

Ling Sen Tong is a Buddhist/Taoist cave temple located at the foot of a limestone hill in Ipoh, Perak. The name literally translates as 'Rock of Heavenly Spirits'. It is located next to Nam Thean Tong and Sam Poh Tong Temples just off the Jalan Gopeng (Gopeng Road) to the South of Ipoh.
