One hope for my visit to this reserve was to see one of these, the only monkey type I had not previously seen. Those in this park are not the same sub-species as the more numerous ones found in the Osa Peninsula.
This is not a great photo but was a very welcome sighting. A group of these monkeys was travelling high up in the canopy, and I only got glimpses of them. This photos is not only at maximum zoom but also very cropped. It has turned out far better than I had exected.
The Mantled Howler (Alouatta palliata), or Golden-mantled Howling Monkey, is a species of howler monkey, a type of New World monkey, from Central and South America. It is one of the monkey species most often seen and heard in the wild in Central America. It takes its "mantled" name from the long guard hairs on its sides.
