Jigokudani Yaen-koen is located in the Nagano prefecture. Because of the steep cliffs and the steam coming off the hot springs, this area was called 'Hell Valley' by people who used to inhabit the area. The area is a haven for snow monkeys (aka Japanese macaques), and a park was established here in 1964.

The monkeys roam freely about the area, and visitors can view them from different platforms. Often, the monkeys decide to roam past the ropes and visit the visitors. You aren't allowed to touch or feed the monkeys, and for the most part, visitors respected their space. While we were there, the monkeys didn't spend too much time in the hot springs as it was a little warm out for them.
