For the men serving aboard the USS Monitor during the historic clash of ironclads on March 9, 1862, the battle was the most exciting time ever experienced. Many of them cherished souvenirs of the battle and the ships involved. These three items belonged to members of the ship's crew.
Eagle Statuette: This small monument was partially made from the remains of armor plating taken from the USS Monitor and the engine of the CSS Virginia. It was presented to the Monitor's Chief Engineer, Alban Stimers, who operated the turret during the battle.
Miniature Wood Tub: made by a sailor, possibly from wood taken from the Virginia.
Carte de Visite Photograph: This souvenir belonged to the Monitor's Acting Master, Louis N. Stodder. It is an image of a shell fragment form the CSS Virginia and a piece of iron plate and flag from the USS Monitor.
Next I glued the cannon into the turret. Since they are concealed, I only painted the front half of each gun
Not sure what kind this is but he always runs directly to the water to swim away. this one was about 2.5 to 3 feet long. There are several that live in this area.
Monitor lizards are generally large reptiles. They have long necks, powerful tails and claws, and well-developed limbs. Most species are terrestrial, but arboreal and semiaquatic monitors are also known.

By sheer luck (what could be more dramatic?) The newly-launched Monitor was on the way to Hampton roads on March 8, and she entered the harbor the morning of March 9 to defend the Union's old-fashioned wooden ships

After finding a stud using a decent studfinder I taped the drill bit to make sure I don't drill further than needed.
I'm going to briefly interrupt the sequence of Devon landscapes to show off my new widescreen monitor, lol!
It's the biggest screen I could find that runs 1920x1080 resolution AND fits into the niche I created for the old screen :-)

These are old TV monitors that met their maker at the old Central TV studios in Birmingham. This picture was taken while on a tour of the old studios in 2007. The place was derelict and awaiting demolition, having closed 10 years earlier in 1997. It was like time had stood still, equipment stood standing as it had the moment it had been switched off 10 years previous. Sad to see what was once a major broadcasting centre in such decay, it long ago having been replaced by a very much smaller facility just for news.
I was planning to paint black lines on the top of the turret to simulating the grating, but the hobby shop didn't have thin enough tape to mask. So instead I decided to do an actual three-dimensional grating with .020 x .030 styrene strips. here they are, cut to 3" long and held down with a prism, which just happened to be the most convenient suitable weight. At the left is the turret roof with the grey paint sanded off.
