Monitoring is a key aspect of Wild Ennerdale and often involves computers. Here information is being downloaded from water measuring equipment o the River Ehen. AS the river is a Special Area f Conservation we are taking baseline readings of the water chemistry before starting to harvest the wind blow at Crag. WE will then compare readings every two days with the pre harvesting readings to ensure tat the harvesting work does not alter the water chemistry.
Has anyone reading this ever set up monitors so they are backed up against a northern window?
How was it? Could you still view the monitors without strain? Were the monitors washed out? Note that we're talking about northern light from the window, so it is indirect light.
I am thinking of moving my workstation against the window because:
a) I want to look out the window more often
-and-
b) To free up space on the wall where my workstation currently exists.
If you have set up your workstation this way, thanks for sharing your experience with me.

Feeling threatened or just sick of me taking its picture, the Goanna climbed the nearest tree.
These Lizards can grow to 140cm long, including the tail.
Improvised monitor hood. Leaving for Indonesia tomorrow had to cannibalise some kit to get a hood for the monitor - thought it came in the box. Anyway it is nice and lightweight and does the job :)
Great thing about it is it is held together by Velcro - so the whole thing comes apart for packing.

Then a little ways up the canal I spotted what must have been that other lizard's Great Grandpappy. This Monitor Lizard was the size of a small alligator, and he cruised lazily up and down the canals and under the bridge where I stood to take this pic. He was HUGE!

Dr. Helen Bailey of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Chesapeake Biological Laboratory and research assistant Mike O’Brien test monitoring equipment that will help State and Federal decision-makers better understand where whales, dolphins and porpoises occur along the coast off of Ocean City. "Varanus salvadorii, first described in 1878, is the largest species of monitor lizard found in New Guinea, and is believed to be one of the longest lizards in the world, reaching up to 244 cm (8.0 ft). It is an arboreal lizard with a dark green body and yellowish bands, a blunt snout and a very long tail. It lives in mangrove swamps and coastal rain forests in the southeastern part of the island, where it feeds on birds, small mammals, eggs, and carrion in the wild, using teeth that are better adapted than those of most monitors for seizing fast-moving prey. Like all monitors it has anatomical features that enable it to breathe more easily when running than other lizards can, and V. salvadorii is thought to have greater stamina than most monitors. Little is known about its reproduction and development, as the species is very difficult to breed in captivity.
V. salvadorii is threatened by deforestation and poaching, and is protected by the CITES (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species) agreement. The lizard is hunted and skinned alive by tribesmen to make drums, who describe the monitor as an evil spirit that "climbs trees, walks upright, breathes fire, and kills men". However they also say that it gives them warnings if there are crocodiles nearby." From Wikipedia.
