More photographs from the picturesque Kyleakin harbor visited towards the end of summer in 2005. The water was calm enough in some places to form almost perfect reflections. The ruins of Castle Moil are seen in the background.

Also known as Dunakin Castle and Castle Moil, it's an ancestral seat of the Clan MacKinnon. The castle occupies a headland above the village of Kyleakin facing the village of Kyle of Lochalsh across the strait. King Haakon IV of Norway assembled his fleet of longboats here before his defeat at the Battle of Largs in 1263 which cost Norway its control of the island. We didn't have time on our visit to explore our ancestral castle but we won't make that mistake next time.
I just read that it was further damaged by a massive lightning strike in February 2018.
This tree in a local park in Moil (northern suburb of Darwin) was uprooted during the strong winds overnight (Feb 15-16). At this point, Tropical Cyclone Carlos was still a tropical low.

The 14th Century Castle Moil has had many names in its long history. Also known as Dun Akyn (Norse for Hakon’s Fort) and An Caisteal Maol inGaelic, it is now a romantic ruin. Sited at the Skye end of the road bridge in the village of Kyleakin, the castle has Norse connections. Legend has it that a Norwegian princess, otherwise known as “Saucy Mary”, ordered a chain to be hung from the castle to the mainland so that no boat could pass without paying a tax.
I did wonder why there was a pub called Saucy Mary's in Kyleakin, and now I know lol!

Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee, where the cotton blooms and blows.
Why he left his home in the South to roam ‘round the Pole, God only knows.
He was always cold, but the land of gold seemed to hold him like a spell;
Though he’d often say in his homely way that “he’d sooner live in hell.”
...Sam dies, and as a last request, is cremated in the boiler of an old paddlewheel steamer on the shore of Lake Lebarge...
And there sat Sam, looking cool and calm, in the heart of the furnace roar;
And he wore a smile you could see a mile, and he said: “Please close that door.
It’s fine in here, but I greatly fear you’ll let in the cold and storm—
Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it’s the first time I’ve been warm.”

After a generally cloudy but rewarding day around Skye, it turned into a glorious evening... It was spent wandering around Kyleakin with a stroll to the castle....

Senator Gabbard was invited to discuss community-based solar programs, which allow utility customers to purchase PV panels at an off-site location and be credited for the energy to reduce their electricity bills. Sub-parallel cuts are made with a rock saw and then the intervening rock is chiseled out, bagged and labelled. This work used to be done with a moil; and hammer and took days.

A very old shot from my first trip abroad to Scotland in 2004. Castle Moil was a 12th century viking stronghold. I shot this with some crappy point and shoot film camera. This and the other photo of the castle are two of my absolute favorite photographs.
A worn apron, with memories woven in,
Passed down by generations, kin to kin.
A mother's pride, a symbol of care,
A treasured relic, with stories to share.
Stains of love, from countless meals,
Spices and sauces, that made hearts feel.
Recipes handed down, with secrets untold,
In that old country apron, worth its weight in gold.
From dough kneaded with love, for bread so warm,
To pies and cookies, in perfect form.
From soups and stews, that simmered slow,
To dishes that delighted, with flavors that glow.
Through tears and laughter, and endless toil,
That apron witnessed, a mother's loyal moil.
A comforting presence, in the kitchen's heat,
A reminder of a mother's love, so sweet.
Now it's worn and frayed, with the passage of time,
But its value remains, like a precious dime.
For in that old country apron, memories are kept,
Of a mother's love, that never slept.
So cherish that apron, a treasure so rare,
For it holds the essence, of a mother's care.
A legacy of love, that's carried on,
In that old country apron, long after she's gone.
