enroute to Silver City, Idaho. I selectively enhanced the reds and increased the contrast to bring out the impact of the light modulation on the scene.
I have had an idea to take photographs of the same diatom slide (a small arrangement) using various contrast techniques for comparison.
The photos are labelled A-K. I know what each was taken with. Techniques (in no particular order!) include;
dark-ground
phase contrast
Hoffman Modulation Contrast (HMC) (DIY)
DIC
oblique
bright-field
relief contrast (Leica, I think designed for inverted)
variable amplitude contrast (VAC)
All were taken with a x10 Plan Apo objective, apart from a couple eg. Phase which is a x10 Plan Fluor
All are stacked images of 7-11 individual images, and processing is minimal, and broadly the same.

The video shows 6 Silicon-Carbide MOSFETs experiencing thermal stress as they constantly switch on and off to provide nice smooth 3-phase sine waveforms at the output of a 2-level power electronics converter. This thermal stress leads to bond-wire fatigue in the switching devices which can potentially result in catastrophic failure of the whole power converter. We developed a "reliability-optimized modulation" algorithm to lower down this fatigue and increase the lifetime of the power modules to enhance the sustainability of the power converter as a crucial KPI.

ERROR! The modulation control keypad (on the right) is fitted upside-down in this photo. I discovered this when the buttons did the wrong things and I had to unscrew it and turn it round.
