There is no false modesty attached to the Splendid Fairy-wren — it lives up to its name. Male birds in breeding plumage shimmer in electric shades of violet-blue, turquoise and pale-blue, relieved only by a few bands of inky black feathers. However, it is not all glitz and glamour because, as in most species of fairy-wrens, males in non-breeding plumage and females are mostly drab brown, although their long tail feathers are dull-blue. The species lives in arid and semi-arid Australia, where it inhabits shrublands and shrubby woodlands

Fat and lazy just outside our kitchen window.
Four of them busy mating without the slightest modesty within arms length at times.
Beautiful trusting birds that loose many of their number due to this characteristic.
Still poached for food by people with seemingly no respect or care for the environment or the joy of others.
It was once acceptable I guess in the early days when hundreds would be found in fruiting trees such as Miro ,Hinau and podocarps but today being a big and obvious bird it gives the impression that they are numerous being so obvious but quite the reverse is true.

If yesterday's offering can be called art - and I think it can; no false modesty here - this shot is pure documentary. It snowed hard the night before, although not for long. This was heavy snow, the kind that makes shovelling hard work, so instead of shovelling, I did a walkabout with camera, admiring the transformation.
This shot is from the edge of the village, along River Road, and the building is our heritage grain elevator, restored from the brink of decrepitude a decade ago. Most elevators across the prairie have fallen to ruin.
Winter was upon is, or so it seemed, but since then all this snow has melted and nothing substantial has fallen. There is some ice on the streets, but only a few patches of snow remain. We're having an El Niño winter. The hills are brown. It doesn't bode well for next year's growing season - if there's little submoisture from snowmelt during spring planting, the farmers' crops will not germinate well.
Tomorrow, the start of a new photo series, looking at local wildlife as they adapt from fall to winter conditions.

Violets found in the flowerbed beside the sidewalk,
The combination of leaves and flowers caught my eye.
