This Duesenberg Model X is one of 13 chassis that were built, of which only five received a finished body. This phaeton coachwork was built by Locke & Co. of New York, which also built bodies for Chrysler and Lincoln. Two phaetons were thought to be built, and this is the only remaining example. It is thought that this Dusenberg made appearances at various auto shows in 1928 in order to keep the Dusenberg name in the public eye before the release of the mighty Duesenberg Model J. It became part of the Harrah’s Automobile Collection in 1964 where the Old Ivory and Painter’s Green paint was restored. By adjusting the valve angle and cam timing of a Dusenberg Model A engine, horsepower increased from 88 to 100 horsepower.

In 1927, worj began on Mount Rushmore, taking until 1941 to complete. The Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) went live with radio programs.
Fourteen hours spent on cloning out the ropes, signs, pillars and stanchions just so everyone (including me) could have a good unobstructed view of this sporty 1927 Duesenberg Model X Boattail Roadster the “center piece” of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Automobile Museum, in my opinion.

The Car
The Duesenberg Model X Dual-Cowl Phaeton is the rarest of the production Duesenbergs, the last one came up for public sale in 1996 and it’s thought that just 5 of the original 13 have survived to the modern day. For many Duesenberg collectors the Model X has proven an elusive car, and very few collections contain one.
The Model X you see here has a dual-cowl phaeton body built by Locke & Company, likely at their Rochester facility however they did still have their New York City premises at the time. It was originally delivered to C. Walter Pratt, a wealthy paper mill owner in Carthage, New York. Pratt must have been impressed with the car as he became one of the first customers for the Duesenberg Model J, buying an early Murphy convertible coupe.
This car passed from Pratt to Edward Sixbury, and then passed on to Wendell Chapelle. It was part way through a restoration in 1964 when it was sold to Harrah’s Automobile Collection, a fortunate acquisition for the car as the restoration was finished to a very high level. The Model X became one of the collection’s most famous automobiles and it was one of Bill Harrah’s favorite cars, he was known to drive it regularly.
The car left the Harrah Collection in 1987, it passed through a small number of hands before being bought by Fred Guyton in 1996. Guyton had been outbid on the car twice previously, and he was thrilled to finally add the famous Model X to his collection.

The Insert
Alice Terry American actress of the 1920’s.
Born: July 24, 1900 in Vincennes, Indiana, USA
Died: December 22, 1987 in Burbank, California, USA
Birth Name: Alice Frances Taaffe
Height: 5’ 3” (1.6 m)
Alice started as an extra in films at age 15. She worked in "Inceville" and would appear as several characters in 'Civilization (1916)'. In 1917, she would meet director Rex Ingram and they would marry in 1921. It was also in 1921 that Alice would gain acclaim as Marguerite in 'The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921)'. She would continue to play the heroine is the films 'The Prisoner of Zenda (1922)' and 'Scaramouche (1923)'. In 1924, Metro would merge into the new MGM and both Ingram and Terry would work there. She would make the 'The Great Divide (1924)' with Wallace Beery in a western melodrama. She would be directed by Ingram in 'The Arab (1924)', which was filmed in North Africa and owed much to the influence of screen idol Valentino. Alice would get her chance to play the wicked woman in 'Mare Nostrum (1926)'. Filmed in Italy and Spain, this film was both a critical and financial success directed by Ingram. Ingram would make his third independent film in Italy when he directed Alice in 'The Garden of Allah (1927)'. Later that year, Alice would be reunited with Ramon Navarro in 'Lovers? (1927)', but the film would not be as well received as their earlier films. When sound came to the screen Alice retired when her favorite director Rex Imgram retired.
Alice Terry made 29 films, not counting four appearances as an extra. Of these 29, 17 are lost films. Six exist in archives around the world and six survive on video and on television broadcast release.
She was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6628 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on February 8, 1960.

Crazy Tuesday THEME: what is it? (parts) 02/20/2024
From 1911, this is the Marchant model x calculator. This item would be later known as a calculator. Marchant was eventually purchased by Smith Corona. Initially Marchant built mechanical/manual machines. They were later part of the electrical business machines
The 1927 Duesenberg Model X Boat Roadster in its new home. This exquisitely restored Model X Duesenberg donated to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum by current owner, University of Michigan English professor Dr. Peter Heydon. Photos courtesy of (The) Appleman
Duesenberg is most often associated with its later Model J automobiles, but it was the Model A, built from 1922-’26, that gave the company its start as an automaker. In between came the Model X, of which 13 were initially planned and just four were built. Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Peter Heydon and his late wife, Rita, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum has been gifted what many have called “the rarest of Duesenbergs,” a one-of-one built 1927 Model X Boat Roadster that would play an influential role in Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg history.
The Duesenberg brothers proved more adept at racing cars than at running businesses, but their Model A line did feature innovative designs like an overhead camshaft eight-cylinder engine and hydraulic brakes. Sales started in late 1921, and by 1926 the company had built an estimated 600 examples; unfortunately it had also gone through a reorganization, officially changing its name from the Duesenberg Automobiles and Motors Company to the Duesenberg Motor Company in 1925. Production continued in the same Indiana factory, but sales had fallen to dismal levels and another bankruptcy loomed.
To reverse the company’s fortunes, Fred Duesenberg began work on a new automobile to replace the Model A. To cut development costs, the chassis would be based upon the one used in the Model A, with modifications that included additional reinforcement and leaf springs mounted above the frame rails for a lower center of gravity. The engine would be derived from the Model A as well, but the 260-cu.in. inline eight-cylinder would receive a revised intake, a new valvetrain, different pistons and a new crankshaft, all of which raised output from 88 horsepower to 100 horsepower, reportedly enough to give the Model X a 100 MPH top speed.
Working with materials at hand, Duesenberg built 13 Model X chassis, sending one example off to Connorsville, Indiana, coachbuilder McFarlan for an aluminum “boat roadster” body. The attention-getting car would be displayed at the 1927 New York Auto Salon, and the Duesenberg brothers hoped the custom-bodied roadster would generate interest in other variants planned for the Model X line.
Except that’s not quite what happened.
