From a shoot at Norwich School of Beauty 7th Feb 2017 (c)John Newstead working with Simon Watson Photography

There is nothing more appealing to me than a dancer in her element.

Strobist: 2 B800's in stripboxes for the background, giving f/16. An X1600 in a large softbox, camera left, giving f/11 for key.

Modelshoot with Cindy

ยฉ 2009 - Dutchfoto

A shoot i did of Ms. @steffwizz had a great shoot with her.

I had a great opportunity to work with this very talented model this weekend along with some of my photographer friends.

Jax Becca

Strobist: 4 lights. Key is an Elinchrom Quadra A head in the Deep Octa, without the outer baffle, boomed over camera axis, at f/8. B800 on a 20ยบ grid at the background (which is a white cyc), 2 other B800s as a rim/hairlights behind right/left. The 2 accent lights are seasoned to taste - no meter readings.

Why is it that lighting tests sometimes produce the most pleasing images? She is trying to stay warm. I'm playing the role of Joe McNally. I even have my Hoodman dangling from my neck like Cecil B. Demille.

I was testing use of a floor skip; there is the gold side of a 42" circular reflector just outside the frame in front of the model. An AB800 is bouncing off of it. The setting sun is to her right (camera left), slightly behind.

Model is Lady Rosetta.

Strobist: 4 lights. Key is a B400 in a medium softbox, camera left, f/8. There is a B800 in a gridded strip box providing the rim, camera right and behind (opposite the key) at f/4. There is another B800 on a 40ยบ grid providing a small highlight on the background for a little bit of separation, not metered but at 1/16 power. A floor skip - a B800 with 8.5" reflector and sock at minimal power, was used for fill. Triggered by Pocket Wizards.

This is an extract in Photoshop with a replacement background. This is what happens when you can't get in studio what you want. And I suck at extracting in Photoshop.

The intent was a black background with rim lighting for separation. The studio does have a black cyc, and I might should have shot the floor-based poses there. But it is not high enough for dance and so I set up on the white cyc., with plans to not light it and hopefully have it go dark.

While deeper, the white cyc was still not deep enough to keep the key form spilling onto it, even gridded. What I should have done is shoot f/2.8 rather than f/8 and maybe it wouldn't have carried as far. I'm so used to worrying about depth of field that I automatically shoot at either 8 or 11. Something to try for next time ...
