About a month and a half ago I went on my first ever model shoot.

This is Deanne, she is a singer/musician in your not so typical 2 women Bluegrass band.

She had seen some of my work and asked if I would want to shoot her. Having never done anything like this before I was a little freaked out but she was totally cool and a blast to work with. The location she had access too was amazing and she was a great model.

I will be posting up some of the images over the next few days and would like any feedback you can think of to help improve them if I ever decide to do something like this again.

Just remember all I had with me was my D7000, 18-200, 50, and one speedlight.

Strobist: 4 lights. A variation on clamshell lighting I call "over/under". The key is an Elinchrom Quadra A head in the Deep Octa, without the outer baffle, boomed over camera axis, at f/5.6. Under this is a B800 in a large octa, providing fill at f/4. B800 on a 20º grid at the background (which is a white cyc), Another B800 as a rim/hairlight behind and camera right. The 2 accent lights are seasoned to taste - no meter readings.

Triggered by Skyport.

This has an extreme amount of retouching, which I normally don't like/do. However, for this image, I felt like the retouching almost had to be surreal, the skin flawless. EVen if it was supposed to be about hair.

I still don't know how I feel about it.

Strobist: B400 in a large octa, camera left, f/8. 2 B800s in softboxes for background, approximately f/16.

Strobist: 2 B800s in strip boxes right/left and slightly behind model, f/8. ABR800 as fill. B800s triggered by Pocket Wizards, the ABR by a sync cord.

Brandi is a body builder who is entering a fitness competition. I would say her level of fitness is high. She is also quite beautiful (I know I had to tell you that); I removed a couple of small blemishes but that was it for post. No general skin retouching.

Strobist: Key is an X1600 in a white 86" PLM in shoot-thru mode, camera left, f/11 at ISO 200. The background is lit with 2 B800s in reflective umbrellas, 1/2 stop over. Triggered by PWs.

Previously unpublished work from earlier in the year. This month is apparently "post processing practice month."

I know Zack Arias said not to bother shooting fashion unless you are in NY or Paris or maybe seasonally in Miami (which is down the road a bit) but I'm not shooting for my portfolio. This is more in the vein of what Sue Bryce of Lindsay Adler do - shooting for their client base.

I actually think the flatter lighting is easier than traditional portrait lighting.
