Two men walking on an empty space with one of them carrying a scale model ship. A somewhat surreal photo for which I have heard some interesting comments!
The most glamorous Martin design was the Model 130 Clipper, the first true intercontinental airliner. Pan American Airways flew the three Martin Clippers from California to The Philippines via Hawaii, Midway, Wake Island, and Guam. But before the aircraft made revenue runs, the Clipper had to be tested. This image, taken on 24 May 1935 (less than six months after first flight), a test crew takes the first aircraft (civil registered X14714) out for a spin—literally—in Chesapeake Bay. This aircraft, christened Hawaii Clipper, vanished without a trace on a flight between Guam and Manilla in July 1938. Nine crew members and six passengers were lost. Philippine Clipper and China Clipper were impressed into US Navy service during World War II.
