This Philadelphus (Mock Orange) blossom was actually only 1/2" in diameter. This plant was right outside my kitchen window.
This pic was taken with a Canon 50mm f:1/4 lens stopped down to f:22, Canon MR-14EX RingLight strobe, with three extension tubes (two Canon EF-25's and one Canon EF-12) to bring the lens out 2-1/2" from the camera. The blossom was only about 3/4" from the lens' glass.
These blossoms gave out a wildly delicious smell similar to orange blossoms, and it was almost intoxicating. Like many flowering plants, they turn their aroma up at night to attract night-flying insect pollinators.
These were in full bloom in mid-March 2008 but as of the 4th of April, all the blossoms had shriveled up and most had fallen off.
Such a stately pose! The Mocking Bird that pecked at the window continuously for a couple of weeks. Thankfully he has moved on!
I like the mock orange because the fragrance is that of an orange blossom -- but the state won't come and steal it from you (like it did with my last citrus trees)

Some experts call it a shrub, some call it a tree. But whatever you call it, the mock orange (Philadelphus coronarius)is a fragrant, flowering addition to the spring garden. Sweet mock orange as it is often called is an irregularly rounded deciduous plant that boasts four petaled, white one and a half inch spring blooms and medium to dark green foliage. Follow these easy tips to add this old fashioned delight to your garden.

Size doesn't seem to matter when you're a Mockingbird with an attitude. This bird took exception to a buzzard near her nest and I can only assume she was mocking him.
Size does matter...better in large size.
