I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desart. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.
I found a nest of mocking bird babies in my Rose bush. I just had to get a photo or two of them, it wasn’t easy because momma and papa kept trying to swoop down and peck me combine that with the thorns from the rose bush and it was an experience.
Everybody have you heard
He's gonna buy me a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird don't sing
He's gonna buy me a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring won't shine
He's gonna surely break this heart of mine
And that's why I keep on tellin' everybody
Say yeah, yeah whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, oh
The male lion mock charged and the Oryx responded aggressively. That's when we noticed it had a broken right front leg/ankle. The lion was put back into the shade and settled down to wait it out. The sun is beating down and the Oryx can't just turn and walk away..... or maybe so. Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa
Hi Everyone, long time no see. My latest large scale build for Bright Bricks. 1:30 scale Mock Tudor House. It took about 4 weeks to build, several bricklink orders and it almost took my sanity, so I hope you like it ;)
There are some WIP photos on my MOCpage. The interior is a mass of support columns and beams to stop it twisting. The lower part of the external walls are made from 1x2 plates, which look great but when stacked this high cause lots of problems. Technically 3 plates stacked on top of each other are actually slightly taller than a brick. It is only a fraction but it adds up. To combat this I built the inner skin from bricks and the outer skin with the plates, every third brick (9 plates) I tied the walls together. This technique is actually very similar to real life cavity wall construction. I knew that surveying degree would come in useful one day ;).
The hallway is visible from the main window at the front of the house so I needed to include some interior details. For the rest of the house I blocked the windows out so you can not see inside.
I enjoyed building this house but it did get tedious by the end. The split levels and the sheer amount of windows and doors was a nightmare. I had to figure out a design for all the windows/doors before starting. I must admit I am very pleased with the outcome especially the plate work on the ground floor and the window lintels – so much snot work it almost drove me mad. Most importantly the client was over the moon with it.
Thanks for looking :D
Another photo of the Mock Orange blossom in the car park. Digging in the recent archives as it's dull and grey here today.
Thank you for your favourites. :O)

Common Mock Viper (Psammodynastes pulverulentus) - Danum Valley, Malaysia
A widespread snake that somewhat resembles a venomous viperid (thus the common name), it is rear-fanged and does possess venom but its so weak that its of no consequence to humans. It is used to subdue its prey which is primarily lizards and frogs. Another unusual factoid about this species is that its one of a just several snake species that have three hemipenes, whereas the majority of snake species have only two. I am unaware of the benefits of having a third hemipene but its a pretty exclusive club of snakes. I am unaware of other species with three but I bet there's atleast some others.
An additional observation about this individual is that it had a little bright red or orange running along its sides next to its belly, a trait I didn't observe in the other members of this species I encountered. Not hugely noticeable but it served to make this snake just a tad bit prettier in my opinion.
33 - Shadows
It's taken me a while to get this right and to deal with how the lighting should work. It's been quite fun trying out different techniques and this end result is not too bad...with the exception of some blown highlights. But we'll ignore that.
I moved my dads car into the garage compound near my house and realised that both headlights were creating a second, slightly softer shadow so I threw my jumper over one of them to block it out. I took a series of shots which were eventually layered and masked in photoshop, and then bumped the curves up to give it more contrast.
Northern Mockingbird, Mimus polyglottos, hanging out in a ceanothus bush along the trail by Southampton Bay, on the east side of Dillon Point, in the Benicia State Recreation Area, Benicia, California. (BTW - open to correction on bird ID)
Amazing detail. Gotta love VR.
Ray Yourdon's comment on this photo: "mock wedding; Price twins on the left (daughters of the superintendent of mines)."
I have no idea when or where this photo was taken...
*********************************
To the best of my knowledge, most of the photos in this Flickr album were taken by my grandmother, Mabel Yourdon, during the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Most of them depict scenes of everyday life in mining camps and small towns near the Utah-Colorado border. Some of them show hunting, fishing, and camping trips in unspecified parts of the American west. It appears that a few of them were taken in southern California, when Mabel and her husband Ike traveled out there to visit relatives.
I have no idea what kind of camera Mabel used for these photos, nor what kind of film. There probably wasn’t that much variety available in the 1920s, and she was not a “professional” photographer. So it may have been a Brownie and whatever B/W film Kodak was selling at the time.
My stepfather, Ray Yourdon, was born in 1922; and his older brother, Marvin, was born two years before that. You’ll see photos of Ray and Marvin when they were young boys, when they were in high school, and when they went off to join the Navy and the Marines to fight in World War II.
Somewhere around 2005, I asked Ray if he could tell me the details of some of the photos; where possible, I have included those details in the notes for the photos. Some of the photos obviously evoked pleasant memories, and I heard stories about minor day-to-day events in his life that I had never heard before. But we rarely got through more than a few pictures before he ran out of energy; and so many of the photos have no explanation at all.
At this point, my parents and grandparents are all gone. I have cousins who grew up in the same area where these photos were taken, and one or two of them are still in that area. They may be able to fill in a few of the details; otherwise, you’ll just have to accept these photos as a glimpse of what life was like nearly a hundred years ago ...
I Know it is a Mocking Bird and they are Common, and sometimes we get to close to there nest and they attack us. I still love them.
