Lewis B. Puller class expeditionary mobile base (ESB)

USNS Lewis B. Puller (T-ESB-3), (formerly T-MLP-3/T-AFSB-1] is the first purpose-built Expeditionary Mobile Base (previously Mobile Landing Platform, then Afloat Forward Staging Base) vessel for the United States Navy. It will be one of two Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) variants of the U.S. Navy's planned fleet of Expeditionary Transfer Dock vessels. Lewis B. Puller is slated to replace USS Ponce (AFSB-(I)-15) currently operating with the U.S. Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf in 2016.

An Expeditionary Transfer Dock (ESD), formerly the Mobile Landing Platform (MLP), was designed to be a semi-submersible, flexible, modular platform providing the Navy with the capability to perform large-scale logistics movements such as the transfer of vehicles and equipment from sea to shore. These ships significantly reduce the dependency on foreign ports and provide support in the absence of port availability.

The ESD and ESB (Expeditionary Mobile Base) and are part of a new ship class added in 2015 with an E as a new designator, similar to the L-class amphibious ships, S-class submarines, A-class auxiliaries and more. These three E-class ships were previously listed as seabasing ships in the Naval Vessel Register.

The iLab Southeast Asia approach is a unique blend of the social and technological development spheres, which have traditionally worked on problem solving in isolation from each other. By working both in the field with users and inside the iLab with other developers, we bridge the gap between what we know is possible and what actually works in the real world. This unique “social-technical” approach fosters collaborative engineering practices, multidisciplinary dialogue, cross-sector partnerships and entrepreneurial innovation serving the public good.

Verboice (verboice.instedd.org/) is a flexible open-source tool that makes it easy for anyone to create and run projects that interact via voice, allowing your users to listen and record messages in their own language and dialect or answer questions with a phone keypad. Verboice projects can start small and scale up, making it possible to improve lives even in communities previously closed off by literacy and technological barriers.

InSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia partnered with the Open Institute, and the Women’s Media Centre to improve their outreach services which focus on women’s health, gender-based violence, and democracy. The project is to assist the Women’s Media Centre and Open Institute in implementing a series of mobile-based information telephone hotlines, scheduled advice services and question boxes for women that complement and extend their current work. Through a customized version of Verboice, women and children will be able to access on demand health information services, therefore increasing their awareness and understanding of health issues they may be at risk for.

For the thirteenth consecutive year, small and independent brewers from coast to coast will participate in American Craft Beer Week (ACBW) from May 14-20, 2018. Presented by CraftBeer.com—the [U.S.] Brewers Association’s website for beer lovers—ACBW celebrates the country’s more than 6,300 small and independent brewers with events across the nation, including exclusive brewery tours, special beer releases, beer and food pairings, tap takeovers and more.

New this year, CraftBeer.com invites beer enthusiasts to toast independent craft brewers during ACBW by pledging to seek beers marked with the independent craft brewer seal. Those who pledge to seek the seal on the ACBW page on CraftBeer.com will receive their very own independent craft brewer seal pin as a badge of their support.

'While beer lovers regularly enjoy their favorite independent craft beers, American Craft Beer Week is a special occasion that provides craft beer enthusiasts across the country with the opportunity to take part in a larger movement and unite for independence, said Jess Baker, editor in chief, CraftBeer.com. 'This year, we encourage beer lovers to seek the seal and remind them to support independent craft brewers during American Craft Beer Week.'

Untappd, the mobile-based social network that connects breweries with craft beer lovers, is also offering an ACBW badge for users who check in a craft beer brewed by an independent craft brewer during ACBW.

Visit CraftBeer.com’s Brewery Finder to find a participating brewery near you, join the conversation using #ACBW and #SeektheSeal on social media and stay up to date with the CraftBeer.com Facebook page.

In 2006, the Brewers Association decided to make American Beer Month (traditionally in July), into a week-long coordinated effort timed before the busy summer beer season.

One week’s worth of national activities was found to be more manageable and thus more effective. Plus, the term 'craft' was added to the title in order to dial in the focus of the events. This week has become the largest national effort focusing on American craft beer and remains so today.

Another old build that has no potential for being sold as... who wants to buy a multi-ton mobile base... you're a sitting duck even in this game and this thing will make your chances of escape pretty much nil.

Still incredibly fun to drive in RP sims that allow vehicles. People who RP seriously crap bricks when this thing appears and freak out. Lol-tastic

Social Innovation Camp started five years ago in the UK and has since then been run in 16 countries globally from which over 30 new social ventures have been created, with 12 receiving further funding, investment or significant in-kind support just in the UK alone.

In November 2012, Social Innovation Camp came to Southeast Asia with an event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Two of the InSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia's Project Managers, Sokha and Mann, traveled to KL to participate in the cross-sector collaborative event which brought together the best of SE Asia’s software developers and designers. The groups had just 48 hours to build some web/mobile-based solutions to a set of social problems – from back-of-the-envelope ideas that could change the world into social start-ups – complete with working software.

The Incra track with ShopStop on the wing table of my miter saw made cutting things to length super easy, though determining those lengths would prove a tad more difficult. The instructions are written in a kind of Engrish, and don't make sense. You'll see in the next pics...

My finishing blade on the miter saw went through these things like they weren't even there. It's supposed to be a tough hardwood, difficult on tools, and it may have had some dulling action on the blade, but it was easier to saw than birch, or poplar. I didn't even notice when the blade engaged, and it went through each in under a second, leaving a perfectly sharp edge behind.

Mangaris™is a trade name for a type of wood known as red balau, a type of mahogany which comes mainly from Indonesia. Stock Building Supply down the street from me stocks it, and it is a good choice of hardwood for me when I need something simple like this. Because of an order mixup, wherein they didn't inform me of the arrival of my prepaid set of 8 4' 2x2s, and then sold them to someone else, they decided to give me 8 3'ers they had on hand when I called, refund the difference (~$1.87/ft., or ~$15 total), and they threw in a 2x4 of Mangaris™ to sweeten the deal for me, for my trouble. Not bad!

There are a variety of textures and colorations in Mangaris™, though all are quite darker than the less exotic pine, and maple. Sometimes Birch can get to this color. This stuff is quite splintery. Some of the 2x2s had rough edges, and I think I got about 8 splinters over the course of the night, the first one - still deep in my right middle finger as I type this - just from carrying a few pieces from the car to the garage.

China home to 110 cities with gigabit 5G, optical fiber coverage

BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The number of cities in China with the capability to offer gigabit 5G and optical fiber services reached 110 by the end of October, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

In terms of regional distribution, 41 of these cities are in east China, 29 in the central region and 40 in the country's west.

Gigabit fiber network coverage in average urban households in these cities exceeded 100 percent, while the number of 5G base stations reached 22.2 per 10,000 people, higher than the national average of 15.7.

In these cities, over 80 percent of the large public hospitals, key universities, major cultural and tourist sites, trunk airports, and key roads have access to 5G network. ■

During the first nine months of the year, operators in China added 795,000 5G base stations

China ended September with a total of 2.22 million 5G base stations across the country, state news service Xinhua reported.

The figure represents a net increase of 795,000 5G base stations from the end of 2021.

The combined operating revenue of the Chinese telecom sector reached nearly CNY1.2 trillion ($167.37 billion) in the January-September period, an increase of 8.2% compared to the same period the previous year, Xinhua reported, citing information provided by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Emerging businesses such as big data, cloud computing, internet data centers and Internet of Things registered a rapid revenue increase during the period. The emerging business revenue of China’s three telecom carriers China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom reached CNY 232.9 billion during the period, up 33.4% year-on-year.

Specifically, revenue from cloud computing and big data increased 127.6% and 62.6%, respectively, in the January-September period.

Chinese operators recorded a net gain of 31.4 million 5G subscribers in September, according to the operators’ latest available statistics.

China Mobile, the world’s largest operator in terms of subscribers, added a total of 18 million 5G subscribers during September. The carrier said it ended last month with 556.8 million 5G subscribers.

China Mobile has added a total of 170 million subscribers in the 5G segment since the beginning of the year.

China Mobile’s overall mobile subscriber base at the end of September amounted to 974.04 million, after a net addition of 798,000 subscribers during the month.

Meanwhile, China Telecom added 7.44 million 5G subscribers last month to take its total 5G subscribers base to 251 million. Since the beginning of the year, the telco has added a total of 63.24 million 5G subscribers.

China Telecom’s overall mobile base amounted to 389.9 million subscribers at the end of last month, after adding 1.89 million customers during September.

Also, China Unicom said it added a total of 6 million 5G subscribers during last month. The carrier ended September with 200.83 million 5G subscribers.

According to recent press reports, China Unicom Unicom had recently obtained the approval from the MIIT to refarm its 904-915 MHz and 949-960 MHz frequencies, currently used for 2G, 3G and 4G. The carrier said it will use the 900 MHz spectrum to expand 5G coverage in rural China and to expand 5G in industrial settings.

Meanwhile China Broadnet, the country’s new telecom carrier, recently reached nationwide coverage with its 5G network. China Broadnet had officially launched 5G services in June.

The operator already supplies cable services and became the country’s fourth operator when formally inaugurated in 2020, having previously acquired a license for commercial 5G services in 2019. The carrier was initially known as China Broadcasting Network before rebranding earlier this year.

According to previous reports, China Broadnet will use 5G infrastructure owned by China Mobile. Last year, China Broadnet and China Mobile said they aim to initially deploy 400,000 5G base stations as part of the companies’ efforts to launch a shared 5G network.
