We visited the splendid Mosteiro de São Martinho de Tibães on a rather wet and gloomy day. Having fallen into a state of considerable decay, it has been superbly restored. The monastery, once the mother house of the Benedictine Order in Portugal, was founded in the mid-11th century but was almost entirely rebuilt during the 17th and 18th century. The monastery was suppressed in 1834 and most of its buildings sold. It was acquired by the Portuguese state in 1986. I was fascinating by these 'before and after' photographs on display outside the Chapter House (seen in the middle of the bottom row). The photograph immediately above it shows the shocking state it was in prior to restoration.
