This town is great piece of Americana. It's way up in the mountains, very high elevation, miles from any other small mountain towns let alone civilization, Colorado's most isolated town. It is definitely a mining town. There are some mining ghost towns around as well. The growing season is 14 days. The buildings are very cool, awesome place. Population is 531, elevation is 9300ft/2835m with surrounding peaks of 13,000 and 14,000 ft. We took a swing through main street and stopped at the gas station to make sure we knew the right way. The guy in there looked pretty surprised to see me :)

The buildings still standing are less than 5% of what was once here.

The Lavender Pit, an open-pit mine in Bisbee, Arizona. It's named not for its color but for Harrison Lavender, an original manager. The buildings in the upper left give some sense of its scale -- it's 900 feet (275 m) deep. It was mined from 1954 until 1974, yielding about 86 million tons of low-grade copper ore, as well as lesser amounts of gold, silver, and turquoise.
