Røros Mining Town, established in 1646, is a world cultural heritage. It is built entirely of wood, and interlinked with a cultural landscape that shows in an outstanding and almost complete manner how mining operations, transportation, and the way of life had to be adapted to the requirements of the natural environment – the mountain plains, the cold climate, the remote location without roads and with marginal growth conditions for forests and agriculture.

After a beautiful drive I reached my destination of Giltedge Montana. It's an abandoned mining town that contains amazing history--Calamity Jane liked to spend her time here! Above is a unique barn I spotted at the edge of town. The fence is a style I don't seen around Montana often.

This was intended to just be a quick photo-op of the outside of the building as what I had read online prior to my trip suggested the brothel was closed, but sure enough the door was wide open, and for $10, this was one of the most fascinating tours of anywhere I have ever visited. A must-stop if you are in Montana!

Day 2: Inland Empire F-Stoppers on the road to Death Valley. After a morning of shooting the spectacular sunrise in Lone Pine, we stopped for a great breakfast in town then headed east towards Death Valley. On our way we made a short stop in the old mining town of Darwin. An unfriendly local made our visit a little uncomfortable and we cut our stay short.

Gold was discovered in Gregory Gulch in 1859. Within one year, 10,000 people arrived in the area. Central City became known as "The richest square mile on earth". Today, Central City is an interesting mining town to explore. Much more historic than neighboring Blackhawk, which has been overrun with fancy casinos.

The cannon at Cannon Point arrived in Downieville on July 1 of 1862. It was purchased in San Francisco in late June by Dr. E. G. Bryant, a young physician and surgeon of Downieville at the time. Brought to town by a freight team, the cannon weighed in at twelve hundred pounds and fired a twelve-pound ball. It was used for celebrations, special events, and Independence Day, to add a bit of excitement to the proceedings. The firing of a cannon is a dangerous thing; however, as this excerpt from an early day paper proves: “By the premature discharge of a cannon fired in honor of the capture of Vicksburg, from the bluffs below town, Lieutenant M. M. Knox and Second Lieutenant William A. Donaldson were horribly mangled and killed. Knox was blown down the declivity two hundred feet, while Donaldson had his eyes blown out, his wrists torn off, and was otherwise mutilated.” Also located at the overlook is a drawing of Downieville from an 1880 photograph which can be compared to the town below today.

Pearce, Arizona is a mining ghost town named for Cornishman James Pearce, miner and cattleman, who discovered gold nearby at what became the Commonwealth Mine in 1894. The Pearce Post Office was established on March 6, 1896. The railroad station opened in 1903. By 1919, Pearce had a population of 1,500. The town declined in the 1930s, and became almost a ghost in the late 1940s, when the mine closed for the last time.

The Commonwealth Mine became one of Arizona's major silver producers. Over 1,000,000 tons of ore were produced from 1895 to 1942. There are about 20 miles of underground workings. The mine produced about $8 million worth of silver and $2.5 million in gold at a time when silver was priced around 50 cents an ounce, and gold was $20 an ounce.

Founded in 1895, Randsburg was the largest town in the Rand Mining District.

Silverton Museum is located in the old gaol buildings. Silverton was established in the 1880s after miners came to the region seeking silver. Lead and zinc was also found in the region. Most miners moved on to the larger centre of Broken Hill nearby and Silverton gradually dwindled towards becoming a ghost town. It has been maintained as a tourist destination. Located in far western New South Wales in Australia.

History

Grass Valley dates from the California Gold Rush, as does nearby Nevada City. It was originally named Centreville when a post office was established in 1851, but renamed Grass Valley the following year for unknown reasons. The town incorporated in 1860.[2]

Grass Valley is the location of the Empire Mine and North Star Mine, two of the richest mines in California. Many of those who came to settle in Grass Valley were tin miners from Cornwall. They were attracted to the California gold fields because the same skills needed for deep tin mining were needed for hardrock (deep) gold mining. Many of them specialized in pumping the water out of very deep mining shafts. This followed the disastrous fall in tin prices as large alluvial deposits began to be exploited elsewhere.

Grass Valley still holds on to its Cornish heritage, with events such as its annual Cornish Christmas and St Piran's Day celebrations.[7] Pasties are a local favorite dish with a few restaurants in town specializing in recipes handed down from the original immigrant generation. Grass Valley is also twinned with the Cornish town of Bodmin, UK.

There was formerly a Roman Catholic diocese of Grass Valley.[8]

Part of Disney's 1957 film Old Yeller was shot here.

Looking through windows in Bodie, California. Bodie is a Ghost Town and a California State Park. Great Place

Taken in Bodie, CA one of California's most notorious ghost towns.

Among the random items scattered about the chat piles.

In case you're curious, this was spotted across the street from a home with TONS of kid stuff out in the yard. It was sad to realize that there are still little ones living in lead contaminated areas, despite the town's knowledge of the effects of lead on child development.

This place is very odd. It looks like parts of it are later add-ons. Maybe just a regular house, maybe a boarding house. The most interesting part is the two crumbling chimneys positioned nearly side by side. Very strange!

"During 1900-1901 Gilt Edge was considered one of the best towns in the country. Gilt Edge reached its peak between 1908 and 1909. Calamity Jane, calling it her favorite, frequented Gilt Edge. On several occasions she spent time in their jail." -centralmt.com

The silver mining town of Pioche reached it's peak in the 1870's, when it had a population of about 6,000. Today around 1000 people live in town. It is a wonderful and historic frontier town to explore.

"The Glass Lady" sits in front of her workshop (the old Post Office for Randsbug) selling her glass ornaments and trinkets that she creates out of old broken pieces of glass from glass bottles to dinnerware. She's very willing to tell you about her glass crafts and shares stories of days gone by. If you take a trip to Randsburg you'll have to pick up one or two of her wares.
