Mogollon 'ghost' town, located in the wild mountains of southwest New Mexico, visited September 8, 2014. Much to my disappointment, it was much more 'town' than 'ghost', with only a handful of abandoned buildings but several houses and a few businesses, lots of people about getting things fixed up and prepared for the winter. The drive up this location was more interesting than the town itself, one-lane hairpin curves carved out of the hillside. Mogollon boasted a population of several thousand in the late nineteenth century and produced many millions of dollars in gold and silver, but as with all these mining towns, eventually fell victim to played out mines and changing economic fortunes, as well as multiple fires and floods (a creek runs through the middle of the main street).

As we were walking down Broad Street in the historic frontier town of Globe, Arizona, I heard a "clop, clop, clop" coming from the south. To my surprise, it was a horse and rider traveling down the street, and I captured them in this photo as they sped past at a pretty fast trot.

INFORMATION AND HISTORY OF GLOBE, ARIZONA:

Globe (Western Apache: Bésh Baa Gowąh) is a city in Gila County, Arizona, United States. According to 2005 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 7,187. The city is the county seat of Gila County. Globe was founded c. 1875 as a mining camp. Mining, tourism, government and retirees are most important in the present-day Globe economy.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.0 square miles (46.7 km²), of which, 18.0 square miles (46.7 km²) of it is land and 0.06% is water. Globe is adjacent to Miami, Arizona, and the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. Globe, Miami, and the unincorporated areas nearby (including Inspiration, Claypool and Central Heights-Midland City) are commonly called Globe-Miami.

Globe has an arid climate, characterized by hot summers and moderate to warm winters. Globe's arid climate is somewhat tempered by its elevation, however, leading to slightly cooler temperatures and slightly more precipitation than Phoenix or Yuma.

Globe's economy is heavily dependent on the mining industry, and as of 2008 the city was home to one of the few operating copper smelters in the United States.

The plans for an incorporated Globe were established in July 1876 with retail stores, banks, and Globe's first newspaper printing its first issue on May 2, 1878. By February 1881, Globe was the Gila County seat. Coming with Globe's new importance as the new county seat came a stage coach link linking it to Silver City, New Mexico.

Due to Globe's relative isolation from the rest of Arizona and it's proximity to the San Carlos Apache reservation, Globe remained a frontier town. Globe's history is laced with many historic events such as murders, stagecoach robberies, outlaws, lynchings, and Apache raids. Natiotish, a San Carlos Apache, left the reservation with a group of about 50 men and continued to attack ranchers and miners.

Globe is also known for having links to Geronimo and the Apache Kid. On October 23, 1889, the Apache Kid's trial was held in the Globe Courthouse. After he was convicted, it was the responsibility of Sheriff Glenn Reynolds to transport him to the Arizona Territorial Prison in Yuma, Arizona. Sheriff Reynolds, his deputy, and their prisoners set out in an armored stagecoach holding the Apache Kid inside. Somewhere near present day Kearny, Arizona, Sheriff Reynolds let the Apache Kid out of the stagecoach seeing as they were on an uphill climb and he wanted to ease the burden on the horses. The Apache Kid was able to overcome and murder Sheriff Reynolds.

In 1884 the surviving Clanton brothers Ike and Phineas arrived in Apache County after the fight the infamous gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone. Ike was eventually killed by a local deputy sheriff, and Phineas, after serving prison time for a stage robbery, moved to Globe, where he died of pneumonia and was buried in 1906.

I stumbled on Pioche, I was looking for a motel/hotel along US 93 and couldn't find a vacancy. The people at a gas station in Caliente, NV suggested staying here - what a stroke of luck. I got the last room.

This town was off the highway a few KMs and I would have bypassed it.

Located at an elevation of 10,152 feet, Leadville is the highest incorporated city in the United States. Founded in 1877 as a silver mining town, Leadville was at one time the second largest city in Colorado, after Denver. Many of the historic mining era building still exist today.

The old mining town of Norseman in the southern end of the West Australian goldfields, owes it's birth to a horse of the same name. This horse, called Norseman, unknowingly scratched the ground, and unearthed a sizable gold nugget on the 13th August 1894. It was an event that caused another gold rush sensation in this area of the west. The horse is immortalised in a statue, on the very sight of that discovery.

Gold was discovered in Gregory Gulch in 1859. Within one year, 10,000 people arrived in the area. Central City became known as "The richest square mile on earth". Today, Central City is an interesting mining town to explore. Much more historic than neighboring Blackhawk, which has been overrun with fancy casinos.

The rush to the 'Silvery Slocan' began in 1891 when vast amounts of silver ore were discovered in this region of south central British Columbia. Within a few years, Sandon was a bustling town of over 5000 people. Today, it is almost a ghost town.

Familiarly called Gibtown, the miners quickly set about building several mines, the largest of which was the A.D.& M. Mine. Soon cabins dotted the hillsides and several businesses were servicing the some 600 men employed in the mines. At the same time, the town served as a supply route along an rugged road between Utah and the Northern Railrway terminal in Montana. At its peak, Gibbonsville boasted more than 100 buildings, including two saw mills, a roller mill, five stamp mills, a newspaper and eight saloons.

Located at 9,305 feet in southwest Colorado, Silverton was a booming mining town in the late 19th Century. Today it depends on tourism, especially day trippers arriving on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

A historic town that caters to tourists, artists, and wine aficionados.

Nestled in the Bitterroot Mountains, just about 13 miles south of the Montana border on U.S. 93, is the small community of Gibbonsville, Idaho. Long before this settlement became a mining camp, Lewis and Clark traveled through the area in September, 1805, describing it as filled with rocky hills and dense vegetation. During their journey, they were required to cut a road just northwest of the present-day townsite through a very steep area. Along the way, several of their horses fell or slipped down the hillsides, during which one was permanently crippled and two gave out.

The cemetery sits high on a mountainside overlooking the little mining town of Creede, CO. First time I visited this cemetery I checked every grave looking for that of Bob Ford, the man who shot Jesse James and was killed in Creede. When I got back to internet service I found that Ford was later exhumed and moved to this hometown of Richmond, MO.

A photo my mother has of Tasu, the small mining town I first grew up in. It really ought to be scanned properly, but this photo-of-a-photo is the best I can do for now.

When I saw the old miner's cabin and the cool blue truck beside it I had to stop for photos! The cabin is too neat, and I love vintage trucks, especially one's that still show a bit of their original paint color. Anyone know what kind of truck it is?

After a beautiful drive I reached my destination of Giltedge Montana. It's an abandoned mining town that contains amazing history--Calamity Jane liked to spend her time here!

"During 1900-1901 Gilt Edge was considered one of the best towns in the country. Gilt Edge reached its peak between 1908 and 1909. Calamity Jane, calling it her favorite, frequented Gilt Edge. On several occasions she spent time in their jail." -centralmt.com

History

Grass Valley dates from the California Gold Rush, as does nearby Nevada City. It was originally named Centreville when a post office was established in 1851, but renamed Grass Valley the following year for unknown reasons. The town incorporated in 1860.[2]

Grass Valley is the location of the Empire Mine and North Star Mine, two of the richest mines in California. Many of those who came to settle in Grass Valley were tin miners from Cornwall. They were attracted to the California gold fields because the same skills needed for deep tin mining were needed for hardrock (deep) gold mining. Many of them specialized in pumping the water out of very deep mining shafts. This followed the disastrous fall in tin prices as large alluvial deposits began to be exploited elsewhere.

Grass Valley still holds on to its Cornish heritage, with events such as its annual Cornish Christmas and St Piran's Day celebrations.[7] Pasties are a local favorite dish with a few restaurants in town specializing in recipes handed down from the original immigrant generation. Grass Valley is also twinned with the Cornish town of Bodmin, UK.

There was formerly a Roman Catholic diocese of Grass Valley.[8]

Part of Disney's 1957 film Old Yeller was shot here.
