To minimize the amount of air in the flow loop, the tubing is gently tapped during the filling process to dislodge and remove any trapped air bubbles. In this example, we are using water dyed with green food coloring to represent blood.
To minimize nest predation by feral cats and humans and improve the reproductive success of the Boa Vista osprey (Pandion haliaetus) population, the National Directorate for the Environment (DNA) and BIOS.CV - Conservation of the Environment and Sustainable Development - have erected several artificial nesting platforms in coastal nesting areas, where low productivity or breeding failure have been rampant in previous seasons. The DNA (through the Directorate for Management of Natural Resources, grants allocated for activities under the CMS Convention) and The International Osprey Foundation (TIOF) have funded this project that was executed between October and November 2014. Cabeólica and CVTelecom are major partners of this conservation initiative that aims at preserving one of the most emblematic species of Cape Verde.
Currently, several platforms that were erected are used by osprey.

This formula is very handy to have. It suggests the optimal pinhole size to use for for a reflective setup like I used. This function describes the pinhole size large enough to minimize diffraction while small enough to minimize the "circle of confusion" (often thought to be my group of closest friends.)
The formula can be used to select an appropriate pinhole size for a focal length for a variety of applications and is:
d = SQRT(2.44 * lambda * (f/(1+(f/s))))
Where
d = diameter of pinhole
lambda = wavelength of the light (400-700nm for visible light) — .0006mm (600nm) is a reasonable value
f = focal length (distance from mirror or pinhole to projection screen or film)
s = subject distance (distance from mirror or pinhole to subject (in this case, the sun))
In this case we are looking at the sun so s is quite large, effectively infinite. So f/s approaches 0 and the whole bottom part of the last factor in the formula can be removed, leaving:
d = SQRT(2.44 * lambda * f)
or
d = SQRT(2.44 * .0006 * f) (assuming 600nm wavelength for light)
To work from a known pinhole size and arrive at an optimum focal length, rearrange the formula to:
f = d^2/(2.44 * lambda)
In either case, adjust lambda as appropriate and use common units throughout (mm is easiest, and what I've used.)
The easiest path to success is to use a paper punch on painters tape to get a nice hole, and then set the focal length to match it. A "pinhole" more than a few mm in diameter makes diffraction a minor issue. Obviously it all depends on the space you have, but a focal length of 10m is a good minimum. And 25-30m works very well and is still easily adjustable (as the sun moves) without special equipment. As it turns out, a typical hole punch is 1/4" which calls for a focal distance of about 27m. If you have less space, a 1/8" punch is available, which works well at about 7m.
If you use the appropriate pinhole size and a good mirror, sunspots are easily viewable. I saw on the internet that some folks in England were able to view and time the transit of Venus using this method (in fact, reading their account is what originally got me interested in doing this.)

Vaccination, masks and social distancing are important measures to protect yourself and to minimize the spread of Covid-19. British Columbia parks have come up with many interesting social distancing signs using bird and animal pictures to guide the required 6 metre distancing between individuals:
Bald eagle (from wing tip to wing tip) at Richmond’s Iona; Cougar (from nose to tip of tail) at Burnaby Lake and Bowen Island’s Crippen Park; Great blue heron (from beak tip to outstretched toes) at Richmond Nature Park; Sasquatch (length of a Sasquatch’s arms stretched out) at Harrison Village; and Sturgeon (from nose to tip of its tail fin) at Richmond’s Terra Nova as shown in this photo.
I was curious to know why a sturgeon was used for the social distancing sign in Terra Nova. It turns out that west of the West Dyke Trail from Terra Nova Rural Park to Garry Point Park is Sturgeon Banks Natural Area. The Sturgeon Banks Natural Area is a tidally influenced salt marsh that is a rich habitat zone for waterfowl, migrating birds and fish species, including juvenile salmon.

My very first oil pastel drawing this year. Though there are several mistakes/areas that need improvements, I thought I had made a decent attempt. Curved lines and excessive whitespace produce a very dreamy, near abstract design
FEEDBACK (Mr. Pullen):
>Minimize whitespace showing
>Try using more heavily textured paper with different colours
1. IMAGINE AND GENERATE
"What if I were to make paintings for my summative project? What if I could use an easier, cleaner, alternative medium to paint that can still produce similar artistic effects and sweeping masterpieces? What if I were to try oil pastel again? I did relatively well with pastel back in F2, as I recall…"
This was, in its essence, the thought process that led me to use oil pastel for my ISP. I was quite excited at the idea, as I really did enjoy using pastel in F2 art. To be completely honest, I had other thoughts too:
"What if I’m actually really good at using pastel? I’m sure it can’t be THAT hard…"
I wanted to be a master of a specific medium, and become an expert in my own personal style. I could see myself making pastel drawings in the summer, while relaxing alone in the Muskoka forests. I never expected to feel a sense of completion by the end of my ISP. From the beginning, I knew that use of oil pastels would be a long-term endeavour, and that choosing oil pastels would allow me to explore an art medium I knew I would enjoy and continue with after the project. As it stands, I’m almost certain I’ll once again be focusing on oil pastel during my ISP next year. Thus, the works I’ve made since starting have all been experimentation, in a way. For each painting, I’ve tried to either modify my style, work with a new type of paper, or both.
Research into different types of pastel yielded several results. The thicker, oilier pastels recommended and the chalky pastels I found in the art room were certainly possibilities, but I decided to use normal, everyday oil pastels, as they were already plentiful in the art room and seemed to fit my artistic goals better.
By this point, medium and design were the two main factors that drove my planning. I was dead set on oil pastel, and I had a vague notion of using a style similar to the Group of Seven. I wanted to glorify nature, placing its most beautiful aspects on pedestal for all to see; It was only later that I discovered that this wasn’t necessarily the Group’s ideology and motivation behind painting, but nevertheless I continued to follow my own chosen theme. I wanted to make my drawings vibrant and beautiful, to the point that they became almost artificial (as I’m disappointed to say). There’s no hint of relationship between nature and humanity in my work, but only the glorification and exaggeration of nature. I briefly considered using more surreal techniques only vaguely reminiscent of the Group to produce a more hazy, dreamlike theme, and this can partially be seen in Trial 1, but ultimately decided against it in further installments.

Why Chimney Sweeping Matters
What You Need to Know About Creosote
How to Minimize Creosote Buildup
Every time the fireplace is used, creosote is deposited in the flue or chimney lining. This is potentially dangerous because creosote is highly flammable. Simply having large deposits of creosote in your chimney is a fire hazard.
You can keep your family safe (and avoid millions of dollars worth of property damage) by simply minimizing this buildup. Today we’re going to talk about the importance of chimney sweeping, and how it helps fight creosote deposits.
Why Chimney Sweeping Matters
The National Fire Protection Association recommends having annual fireplace and chimney inspections to determine whether the creosote buildup has reached dangerous levels. This, in turn, helps reduce the possibility of fires.
Otherwise, creosote can easily ignite and cause a chimney fire, which can quickly escalate into something more serious. Did you know that around 30 percent of all house fires every year are caused by unclean chimneys?
Chimney sweeps perform these inspections to ensure that everything is in order—and that’s not just about the creosote. They will tell you if there are parts that need to be repaired and if there components that are damaged and have to be replaced. The chimney is exposed to all kinds of elements all year long. And so it is susceptible to damage and wear, even if it is not being actively used.
It can serve as the home to small animals who like to make a nest there. It could be damaged by harsh weather and cause leaking.
Your chimney sweep will make sure your fireplace and chimney is performing optimally, so you can enjoy it without fear. And of course, they’ll keep it clean too.
What You Need to Know About Creosote
Here’s a little more info about creosote, so that you’ll have an idea on what you are up against. Creosote is a filmy substance that sticks to the lining of your chimney. It is quite hard to remove if you don’t know how. But if you can invest on a chimney sweeping log, it can make the job easier for you or the chimney sweep.
Chimney sweeping logs are infused with chemicals that are released when the log is burned. The chemicals cling to the creosote, drying it up and preparing it for removal.
Sometimes this won’t be necessary, especially if you keep your chimney clean all year round. At first, creosote is just like flaky soot that can easily be brushed away with a simple chimney brush. But in time, it can become harder and shinier, at which point the chimney sweeping logs can be very useful. It contains hardened tar that’s very hard to brush away.
If you let this progress any further, the creosote can become extremely difficult to clean. It becomes a highly concentrated fuel that resembles a coating of tar. It’s very thick and hardened at this point, and fire can ignite it. Sometimes, it is better to replace the chimney liner entirely instead of cleaning it.
How to Minimize Creosote Buildup
There are ways to slow down your chimney’s creosote buildup. It’s obviously a better idea to deal with creosote sooner rather than later. So if you want to minimize the buildup, one of the things you can do is avoid burning newly cut, unseasoned firewood. It typically takes between six months and one year for it to get a low moisture content.
