Here's another photo of the beautiful, and beautifully empty Charles Bridge in Prague early in the morning.

This time in full width and without my daughter's presence. However, there is also a version with her, which I will show later, despite the risk of repeating myself too often.

To minimize this risk, here are a few more facts about this important bridge.

The Charles Bridge is one of the oldest stone bridges in Europe and was built in the 14th century. The foundation stone was laid in 1357 by Emperor Charles IV, which also explains who the bridge is named after.

The sculptures of various Christian saints on both sides of the bridge were gradually erected much later (between 1683 and 1890). One was replaced in 1938 after being badly damaged in the 1890 flood.

The two sculptures in the foreground are Saint Francis Xavier (right) and Saints Cyril and Methodius (left).

Mid tide at the natural pool on Ile des Pins, New Caledonia, in the early morning, I had to stand very still to prevent causing ripples with each movement, almost chest deep in the water, I also used a polariser to minimize the reflections of the pine forest, you can see some fish and giant clams, well not so giant as in Palau but as big as a human head, in the waters here. This is a beautiful spot but very busy with people after early morning, and what you see depends on the tide level and the winds, fortunately it was reasonably calm.

Hawa Mahal is the tallest building in the world without a foundation. The five-storey building managed to maintain upright because of it is curved. Just another masterpiece of Rajput and Mughal architecture.

Durga Puja pandal architecture is a vibrant and dynamic art form, deeply rooted in Bengali tradition but continuously evolving with contemporary trends. The pandal serves as the temporary abode for the goddess Durga during the annual festival and is often an elaborate and creative expression of architectural ingenuity.

Materials Used

Bamboo: The traditional material used for the structure of the pandal, which is highly flexible and abundant.

Cloth and Paper: These are used for decorations, draping, and wall coverings. They are often painted or printed with intricate designs.

Plaster of Paris and Clay: Used for creating idols and sculptures.

Fiberglass and Metal: These are often used in modern pandals for creating stronger, more durable structures.

1. Traditional Designs

Bengali Folk Art: Traditional pandals often draw from rural Bengal’s heritage, incorporating local materials like bamboo, jute, and clay. These pandals typically feature motifs inspired by nature, mythology, and folk art.

Sholar Kaaj: This is a technique involving intricate designs made from shola (a type of plant) and is used to create ornaments, canopies, and decorations within the pandal.

Terracotta and Wooden Crafts: Terracotta sculptures, wooden carvings, and images of mythological figures are common in older pandals.

2. Modern Interpretations

Innovative Materials: Modern pandals often use contemporary materials like fiberglass, metal, and plastic alongside traditional materials. For instance, large fiberglass idols of Durga are increasingly used, along with innovative lighting, mirrors, and glasswork.

Thematic Pandals: Many pandals these days are built around a specific theme. The themes can range from environmental issues (like conservation of rivers or wildlife) to technological advancements, historical events, or even popular culture. The architecture of the pandal is designed to reflect this theme, often incorporating multimedia elements.

Eco-friendly Designs: In recent years, there has been a push for sustainable and eco-friendly pandals. These are often constructed using biodegradable materials such as bamboo, paper, and cloth, with designs that minimize environmental impact.

3. Architectural Features

Structural Form: Traditionally, pandals were dome-shaped or cylindrical, but now they can take on all sorts of avant-garde shapes, from temples to spaceships to replicas of famous monuments like the Eiffel Tower or the Taj Mahal.

Facade and Entrances: The entrance of the pandal is often grand and acts as a focal point of the design. It may incorporate arches, columns, and ornate carvings, often reflecting the temple architecture of India.

Ceilings and Roofs: The roofs of pandals are a key area for artistic expression, ranging from elaborate canopies made of flowers to highly stylized, often abstract, designs using light and color.

Lighting: Pandals are spectacularly lit, with millions of light bulbs strung up in intricate patterns. The lighting not only enhances the aesthetics but also creates a divine ambiance, especially at night.

Interior Layout: The interior of the pandal is designed to accommodate the idol of Durga, with a focus on creating a spiritual environment. The idol is often placed on a raised platform, surrounded by artistic depictions of various deities, animals, and scenes from mythology.

4. Regional Variations

Kolkata Pandals: In Kolkata, Durga Puja pandals are known for their immense creativity and often become larger-than-life structures. Famous areas like Kumartuli, Behala, and Santoshpur are known for their extravagant pandals.

Delhi and Other Urban Centers: Pandal designs in metropolitan areas might incorporate modern styles, influenced by international trends, such as futuristic designs, art installations, or replicas of foreign monuments. These pandals often blend cultural elements with urban sophistication.

Rural and Smaller Town Pandals: These tend to have simpler, more rustic designs but are rich in cultural symbolism. Often constructed with bamboo, they may showcase more traditional and handcrafted artworks.

5. Innovative and Avant-Garde Designs

Optical Illusions: Some pandals are designed to give the illusion of floating structures, using materials like mirrors and lights to create mesmerizing visual effects.

Interactive and Immersive Designs: Some pandals now aim to create immersive experiences. Visitors can walk through installations that engage all their senses, with sounds, lights, and even augmented reality elements enhancing the experience.

6. Famous Pandals and Their Architects

Kumartuli Park (Kolkata): Known for its amazing artistry!

Cinema to watch "Paddington in Peru". Paddington and Matilda had never been to cinema and were very excited

Paddington: "Look, there is a large white quadrangle. It is a screen and we will see the movie there!"

Matilda: "How they will get the movie on that screen?"

Paddington: "The film is projected with a movie projector onto a large projection screen that we see at the front of the auditorium."

Matilda: "Why it is getting so dark! I cannot see you anymore, nor Ilona!"

Paddinton: "A dark environment minimizes distractions, allowing viewers to focus entirely on the film. "

Matilda: ""What, what did you say?"

Paddington: "When the movie starts you have to look only forward! Not at me or Ilona!"

Matilda: "What is that ? I can smell something!"

Paddington: "I smell something too!"

I had to explain to friends that people were eating snacks, particularly popcorn. And crisps. And chocolates. And we could hear the wrapping paper rustle around.

Don't be concerned by the raised head and foot: that was in response to my presence, not the bird's. From around the end of October until sometime in April, alligators do not actively pursue prey but rather minimize their energy output as their metabolism slows. When the water temperature drops into the low 50s F, they enter a lethargic state of brumation but still might climb onto the bank to sunbathe on a warm afternoon. Most of the lower links in the food chain seem to be aware of the schedule and take liberties they would avoid during warmer months.

After the somewhat gloomy photo from yesterday, I need a balance with a little more color.

This photo, which I took last November in Hrensko in the bohemian part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, fits in very well.

Here you can see the old gasworks in Hrensko, a small town in Bohemia right on the border with Germany. It is one of the most popular photo opportunities in town and it wasn't my first visit either.

The impressive building, which now houses a restaurant, was built in 1905 to produce acetylene gas. To minimize the risks to the surrounding area in the event of an explosion, a location was chosen in a narrow rocky gorge, which is now one of the reasons why it is so popular with photographers.

Although this tiny gem of an orchid is found throughout much of Canada, Greenland, and part of the northern United States, I only became aware of it about ten years ago. From six feet above the ground, it is fairly inconspicuous. Get down on your elbows and knees, though, and it is spectacular.

Due to a busy background I have used the Ethan Winning style here, although with a different tool set, darkening the edges and corners to minimize distractions. Below the top two flowers, the composition breaks down into out of focus clutter, so I'm not totally satisfied with this image. But the two main flowers are so spectacular that I think it is worth posting. Each of these flowers would measure less than an inch from top to bottom.

The plant grows in wet places, especially well-drained limestone soils and shady spruce forests. It doesn't tolerate acidic soils, which explains why I've never found it in bogs. This specimen was growing along a creek drainage in Banff.

While taking in views looking to the southeast at the overlook at Yovimpa Point in Bryce Canyon National Park. My thinking in composing this image was to create a layered look with the nearby escarpment and eroded formations of hoodoos leading off to the southern Utah landscape covered with trees on the hillsides and plateaus. The next one is to take advantage of a color contrast between the earth tones and the greens and yellows of the trees. I angled my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to create more of a sweeping view across this landscape. I felt that would add a little sense of grandeur to the terrain relief present as well as bringing the horizon higher into the image. It would also help to minimize the sun shining directly across the lens and creating lens flares as it was still low in the sky's that morning. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

I've been a bit preoccupied with other things lately and haven't shot a lot of portraiture. However, I thought I'd try a couple of self portraits yesterday incorporating the use of my newly acquired Sekonic L-758DR. Using the light meter I'm better able to nail exposure in a shorter amount of time.

Throughout this exercise I started thinking about shadows. My typical portrait style has revolved around minimizing shadows and slightly overexposing skin tones. But the more I shoot, the more I realize that carefully crafting the appearance and location of shadows can help create a fantastic, albeit moody image. That's why I'm going to start focusing more on shadows and how they help craft a captivating image.

Having extracted their legs from the ice that formed around them during the night, these Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) wait for others in their family group to assemble before they fly to the nearby fields for a day of foraging for food.

The one-legged stance minimizes contact with the ice and subsequent heat loss. The blood veins returning from the chilled feet are warmed by a net of arteries covering them, minimizing cooling of the crane's core (aka counter-current heat exchange).

“They’re opening their mouths; they must be hungry,” said Ellie Diamant, a graduate student in biology. “Sometimes they can get annoyed, pass out, poop or vocalize, but we try to minimize their stress as much as possible.”

Diamant is part of the Yeh Lab, which analyzes the Southern Californian populations of dark-eyed juncos, a bird species native to the mountainous regions of North America. ...

Parent juncos are also territorial and protective of their nest, Bressler said, and can confront researchers when they try to approach it. ...

Despite difficulties in collecting data from juncos at times, Yeh said she hopes students on campus can appreciate their presence and participate in scientific thinking by observing the juncos’ interesting behaviors on their own." UCLA Daily Bruin

I have seen Swainson's Hawks feed feathers to their young and was excited to see this behavior in the Eared Grebe also. More photos of this sequence are in the comment box.

"The purpose(s) of feather eating is unproven but evidence suggests that the behavior has these benefits for the birds.

1. Some of the ingested feathers form a plug in the pylorus, between the stomach and small intestine, which acts as a strainer to keep fish bones in the stomach long enough to be completely digested.

2. Most swallowed feathers end up in the stomach lumen, mixed with food. They eventually (along with any indigestible matter) form pellets that are ejected through the mouth. The continuous passage of these pellets through the upper digestive system minimizes the buildup of a variety of parasites that are very common there and plague grebes."

In architecture, a gargoyle is a carved or formed grotesque with a spout designed to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building, thereby preventing rainwater from running down masonry walls and eroding the mortar between. Architects often used multiple gargoyles on a building to divide the flow of rainwater off the roof to minimize the potential damage from a rainstorm. A trough is cut in the back of the gargoyle and rainwater typically exits through the open mouth.

The exterior consists of a portico of eight Doric columns and is surmounted by a large lacunar niche. The slit windows that open onto the facade are inspired by the Roman baths and had a certain architectural influence on many buildings built in Livorno. Two marble statues depicting Morra and Camorra, the two main springs, were to be placed on the sides of the large halved dome. The interior is structured with naves supported by pillars with the base immersed in the waters which are deposited and purged here. To minimize temperature variations, the building has a double vault and roof covering. The cistern could contain 11,000 cubic meters of water.

I joined the Flickr community back in 2014, and I wish I would have joined years before. Like just about every other aspect of the internet, it can provide information that leads to education. Because it is a photo sharing community, for me, it shares beauty and adventure…not to mention as I see where others are “getting the shot” so I can make plans to eventually go there! I have learned so much from those that I follow on Flickr, they truly have no idea how much they have elevated my passion. The downside to the internet, and Flickr is not immune to those who use it to promote their politics and perversions…easily avoided but sadly still there.

I probably spend an hour a day on Flickr, liking and making comments on others posts and enjoying their kindnesses on mine. I still sit in amazement when I post a photo, and a second or two later someone in India, Holland, Australia and Russia have already liked it. As one (back in my Navy days) who use to wait to hit ports to call home or receive a letter that was mailed in my direction a month earlier, my old man brain just can’t wrap itself around the speed of communication today.

It was probably sometime in early December that I opened Flicker to see what others had posted. One of the first photos to pop up was that of a young lady petting a horse. It was a fantastic photo but something came over me…a chill, a feeling of deja-vu that made me sit forward in my chair and place my face closer to the screen of my computer. It wasn’t the young lady, as she was a stranger and that would make me a pervert…it was the horse…I had seen that horse before. The feeling of familiarity and mild ADHD led me to drop what I was doing as I needed to investigate.

I minimized Flickr and opened my Lightroom program where I still had some 900-1000 photos to edit from Ireland and the second half of Scotland. The horses distinct color, the pasture with the ocean behind it started to drive me crazy! I could remember photographing the same horse, I just couldn’t remember where.

It didn’t take long to find the file. Opening Flickr back up, I did a side-by-side comparison, sitting in amazement that it was in fact the same. At no time in my life has the world felt smaller…someone, a total stranger from Germany that I follow on flicker and I think may follow me was on the same Irish backroad near the Cliffs of Moher just a few days before…photographing the same horse.

I started to research the probability of this happening…I can’t...I hate math. But here are a few Flickr facts:

Number of photos shared daily: 3.5 million

Number of photos shared: over 10 billion since its founding in 2004

Total number of users: over 112 million from 72 countries

Most popular cameras used: iPhone- 54% / Canon- 23% / Nikon- 18%

This makes me wonder just how often that horses photo is taken…

The Chevrolet Corvette (C7) is the seventh generation of the Corvette sports car manufactured by American automobile manufacturer Chevrolet from 2014 until 2019. The first C7 Corvettes were delivered in the third quarter of 2013. The racing variants include the C7.R, which won the GTLM 24 Hours of Le Mans.

GM executives began planning the next-generation (C7) Corvette sports car in 2007. The car was originally planned for the 2011 model year, but was delayed. Mid-engine and rear-engine layouts had been considered, but the front mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform was chosen to keep costs lower.

The lead exterior designer of the C7 Corvette was Hwasup Lee, whose team completed the design between 2010 and 2011. The design director for the C7 was Kirk Bennion and the design was approved by the division's design director, Tom Peters, in 2011.

The 2014 Corvette debuted on Sunday, January 13, 2013, in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show. Chevrolet also showed the new crossed flags logo for the Corvette.

While overall the C7 attempts to provide an evolutionary redesign to an iconic theme, the car's designers incorporated aggressive angular elements. The C7 received criticism for some of the more styled elements of the car. "The rear contains what will surely be the C7's most controversial styling elements. It's all creases and vents back there, with aggressive trapezoidal taillights similar to those found on the current Camaro and quadruple-barreled tailpipes lined up in a neat row in the center of the rear valance", wrote Jason Kavanagh for Edmunds. Functional aerodynamic aids are tacked on or cut into every body panel of the C7, often juxtaposed against sharp creases. This is a radical departure from the prior generations of Corvettes, whose styling had no spoiler, few body panel creases, and only semi-functional gills for front brake cooling. In addition, past Corvette models minimized the size of headlamps or even hid them altogether. The C7 reverses that minimalist styling language with intricately styled headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights (DRL).

The C7's all-new LT1 6.2L Small Block V-8 engine develops 460 horsepower (340 kW) and 465 pound-feet (630 N⋅m) of torque. This comes with the performance exhaust package, which is already included in the Z51 Performance Package or the level-up model, the Grand Sport, but is very common to see the standalone performance exhaust package being paired up with the base model. Without the performance exhaust, the powertrain produces 455 horsepower (339 kW) and 460 pound-feet (620 N⋅m) of torque. With the performance exhaust, the car can accelerate from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.7 seconds when paired with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. The C7's suspension consists of independent unequal-length double wishbones with transverse fiberglass mono-leaf springs and optional magnetorheological dampers, similar to its predecessor.

Interesting how the dew droplets minimize their contact with the leaves to form natural spherical lenses..

I spent this past week riding my bike on the "Tour de Nebraska," a 216 mile route through the beautiful sandhill region of north central Nebraska. Minimizing weight meant taking the lightest camera I had, my iphone. We enjoyed the wonderful prairie, oak savannas, and ponderosa pine forests of the region, as well as the Niobrara River valley.

The ride was given the impromptu title "Headwind Tour" as we battled the wind most of the way, despite doing a loop. We also coped with a couple of rainy mornings, but the temperatures were mild compared to the expected norms.

This scene was around 20 miles into the final day's ride, with a rest stop at the Sparks General Store. The morning rain and clouds are clearing out, though the wind was picking up out of the southeast, the direction we were headed.

The painted Trillium (Trillium undulatum) is a wildflower that blooms early in Spring and is native to North East America. The flowers differ from the common White Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) by their smaller size and characteristic red "painted" centres.

Painted Trilliums grow in woodland habitats generally in understorey shade in acidic soil.

A Black-tailed Prairie Dog pauses near its den entrance with a bundle of newly-cut, dried grass. Presumably this will be used as nesting material, as I never see them eating this stuff above ground. Prairie dogs eat forbs and various fresh green grasses, and enjoy the roots of some plants,

Cutting dried grasses serves another purpose: keeping sight lines clear to minimize natural cover for stalking predators such as coyotes.
