Wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, Tanzania

We had gone to the lighthouse to watch the whales. An annual migration for all of us. We usually wait until we know there are so many going by that we'll see some. We saw lots.

But just as we were counting spouts and pointing to pods coming through, this Coast Guard plane flew right over us. It followed the coast, like the whales only in reverse, so it came right to the point of Point Reyes at the lighthouse, then turned in towards Chimney Rock.

It felt like a big harmonic convergence of migrations. Ours. The whales. And the Coast Guard pilot.

What does it mean to be an immigrant? And who is really impacted when people leave their homes in search of a dream? Is there more to the story than what is debated in the press? Using popular education tools, the Latin American and Caribbean Community Center leads participants in mapping their personal migration stories and identifying the forces that encourage us to get up and move.

The wildebeest (plural wildebeest or wildebeests), also called the gnu ( /ˈnuː/ noo or /ˈnjuː/ new) is an antelope of the genus Connochaetes. It is a hooved (ungulate) mammal. Wildebeest is Dutch for "wild beast" or "wild cattle" in Afrikaans (beest = cattle), while Connochaetes derives from the Greek words konnos ("beard") and khaite ("flowing hair"). The name "gnu" originates from the Khoikhoi name for these animals, "gnou".

Folllow our adventures on... Life in Travel

It can get quite loud here in the spring with the flocks of red-winged blackbirds that pass through, but I love hearing their song, so cheerful and wild.

Here is a flock taking roost on a tree made of wire, epoxy, and coated with painted paper. Mounted on an old hymnal the tree is growing from an antique shoe last onto which I made a tiny keepsake box for the heel.

Doyle et al. have designed a new technique for micropatterning proteins onto coverslips to determine how topography dictates migration. In doing so they found that migration along a straight line is very similar to 3D migration. (JCB 184(4) TOC1)
