Midwinter - 21. December - Beginning of Winter: The shortest day - the longest night ! It was snowing that day ...

this is a bit of a mood piece -- not sure how well it works

taken outside the Detroit Institute of Arts, looking northwest past the Park Shelton residences to the Fisher Building tower in the background.

apparently Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo stayed for 6 months in the Park Shelton, named the Wardell Hotel at the time, when Rivera was painting a set of murals of industry for Henry Ford in the early 1930s

Tonight was the midwinter carnival. The centre of town closes to traffic and the lights turn off...then the druming starts and the procession begins...handmade lanterns and lit paper sculptures. It's otheworldly. NONE of my photos turned out. Next year I'm leaving the camera at home ;-) But I liked the medieval feeling of parts of this image. Happy Winter Solstice!

(And Happy Summer Solstice to you in the North :-)

'Midwinter Fire' Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea)

This deciduous shrub has oval mid-green leaves and produces small creamy-white flowers in May and June.

It's really grown for the brilliant flame-coloured stems that are revealed when the leaves, which turn orange-yellow in autumn, fall.

Exposure: Full sun

Hardiness: Hardy Soil type: Well-drained/light, Clay/heavy, Chalky/alkaline, Moist - in other words, not that fussy!

Midwinter spring is its own season

Sempiternal though sodden towards sundown,

Suspended in time, between pole and tropic.

When the short day is brightest, with frost and fire,

The brief sun flames the ice, on pond and ditches,

In windless cold that is the heart's heat,

Reflecting in a watery mirror

A glare that is blindness in the early afternoon.

And glow more intense than blaze of branch, or brazier,

Stirs the dumb spirit: no wind, but pentecostal fire

In the dark time of the year. Between melting and freezing

The soul's sap quivers.

サクラステージのイルミネーションはとってもお洒落なんですがなぜか人影はまばらです。

The illuminations at Sakura Stage are very stylish, but strangely there are few people around.

Midwinter,

Yule...

the sun is far away,

days are short and cold,

but slowly now

she will return...

A happy Midwinter to you all!!!
