On one of the shortest days of the year the landscape looks completely defeated. Yet despite appearances this was a mild day and could easily have passed for late February.
The sun won't crest the horizon for another four or five minutes, but you can't have everything can you. Fortunately this ballast train had 13 Maersk containers up front and there was enough light floating about to make it worthwhile.
A freighter in the distance waits offshore for a berth at Port Chalmers near Dunedin.
Mr Wallace and I spent a few sub zero mornings getting up at (for us) abnormally early hours to follow these, fortunately using their Dunedin Chez as a base. The better halves being more sensible and sleeping off any excesses imbibed on the previous nights.

Not quite midwinter, but very nearly. This photo was taken by shooting directly into the sun on Newcastle's main shopping street and being totally blinded - I had no idea what or who I was recording.
Taken this morning 5 minutes from home. It was only -2 C this morning; positively barmy compared to -10 C at the same time yesterday
Lesotho's "Main Road North" runs through the village of Ha Morameng in the north west of the country. Well tarmacked but narrow, this is one of the southern African mountain kingdom's main roads. The trees are bare in July midwinter.
At around 1700m above sea-level, this area in the Leribe District is in Lesotho's lowlands, and the mountains in the distance are relatively "low" too, as evidenced by the lack of snow cover.
One from the winter....Same area as previous shot. Today seems almost like winter! Midsummer and struggling to reach 13C.
With a wee bit of a midwinter color change. ;-)

A picture that are some weeks old now. The warm weather we have had since then has melted all snow from the trees.
