Once again, in 2010, Zhao’s group prepared coreeshell ultrathin fibers with a novel nanowire-inmicrotube structure by the multifluidic coaxial electrospinning approach. As shown on the left of Fig. 5.20, the spinneret was assembled by three coaxial stainless-steel capillaries, through which three selected fluids were fed to form a compound jet under a high electric field. The middle fluid served as a spacer to protect the inner and outer fluids from each other. The rectangular and circular insets show the configuration of the spinneret and the ideal structure of the collected fibers, respectively. The key step of this method for preparing nanowire-in-microtube fibers successfully is to use a designed compound spinneret and introduce an extra middle fluid to work as a spacer. In this case, highly miscible or microphase separation solution systems were harmonized and cojetted to sandwich ultrathin fibers. Fig. 5.20AeD show magnified cross-sectional SEM images of the sample, in which the fibers show a uniform morphology and continuous nanowire in the microtube. The author using this new method prepared inorganic TiO2 nanowire-in-microtube (NW@MT)

Today was another day away from routine work, getting familiar with the processes I will be using for my secondment project.
This unassuming little grey box is a thermal cycler, which performs something which blows my mind just as much today as it did when I first learned about the technique whilst doing my first degree in the early 90's. Inside it sits a series of microtubes each containing a reaction mixture including 10 microlitres of my extracts from clinical samples which were obtained from the machine I snapped a couple of weeks ago . Inside these tiny tubes the polymerase chain reaction happens. This reaction selectively amplifies DNA of interest, if it is present in the mixture. The particular type of PCR happening here is a multiplex reaction, so that target DNA from 20 different pathogenic organisms can be amplified, and following another reaction step, detected. This tells us whether a particular clinical sample contains one or more of the pathogens of interest, all within a relatively short time, certainly within a working day from receipt of the clinical sample to the reporting of results once we are up and running properly.
Basically, inside this box DNA, the very building blocks of life, is being synthesised. Like I said - mind blowing!
