Dendrite
2010-2011 season
31 January, 2011, minor accumulation event. New photography method (no slides used, crystal collected on black felt and shot without making casting).
Microscopic photo showing parathyroid gland hyperplasia with nodular proliferation clear cells. The clear cells are variable in size with abundant optically clear cytoplasm, alveolar and trabecular growth patterns. No fat cells are seen. H & E stain. 20X objective magnification. Jian-Hua Qiao, MD, FCAP, Los Angeles, CA, USA.
Take a closer look at kefir under the microscope with it's chemical structure superimposed. A Stuart Wallace original digital artwork.
Some sort of primitive organism on my lens. Funny how they seem to resemble plants swaying on a cold winter's night.
Microscopic photo showing cystic wall tissue lined by stratified epithelium with intraluminal papillary projections. The myoepithelial cells show clear vaculated cytoplasm. Dense fibrosis is present in the cystic wall tissue. H&E stain. 20X Original objective magnification. Jian-Hua Qiao, MD, FCAP, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Tumor cells growing along the alveolar walls without stromal, vascular or lymphatic invasion. If this were the only finding in the resected tumor then the diagnosis would be adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) The finding of lepidic growth only in a biopsy specimen should be accompanied by a comment stating that invasion can only be excluded by microscopic examination of the entire tumor.
Tumors with this microscopic appearance have, in the past, been called bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. This diagnostic term is now obsolete.
