Macro Holga photo of some of the collections at the St. Louis Science Center.
The collections are remnants of when the museum started at a Natural History and Science Museum. They are now stored in a non-public site and used occasionally for displays.

Final-instar Chilenocaecilius ornatipennis nymph found on a fencepost in the Kingmoor Sidings Nature Reserve, Carlisle, 22 December 17.
This might not look much, but it's without doubt my most interesting - and perhaps important - finding to date!
I'd no idea what species it might be at the time, but as it was the first sizable barkfly nymph I'd seen all winter, I thought it was worth collecting. As soon as I'd given it a quick once-over at home and had spotted its distinctive head markings, I couldn't see what else it could be other than a Chilenocaecilius ornatipennis nymph. Although I'd found my second adult of this UK rarity just two days earlier, it had never entered my head that I'd also be finding a youngster - especially at this time of year!
It was photographed with the integral camera on my SX10D microscope, Photos 1 and 3 being taken on the day of capture, with Photo 2 (a ventral shot through the lid of a petri dish) taken the following day.
As it seemed to me to be an important discovery, I sent a few images to Keith Alexander, UK barkfly expert and the coordinator of the National Barkfly Recording Scheme (Britain and Ireland) website. He agreed that it was probably a Chilenocaecilius ornatipennis nymph but suggested that I try to rear it through to adult for confirmation (see later photos).
Interestingly, the images were also passed on to Charles Lienhard, a renowned entomologist from the Natural History Museum of Geneva. He was not aware of any existing photographs of this nymph, so these may be a world first!

The last detail I want to show you is the power switch on the back. I just had to have a tumbler switch for the microscope, one that had to be functional! This was something that gave me quite a headache from figuring out how... Beside the switch is the power inlet, a redundancy of course, because unlike its real-life counterparts, this microscope is battery powered!
