Ping Pong Ball Cactus (fruiting) at Oliver Lee State Park, Otero Co., NM, 130830. Epithelantha micromeris. Core eudicots: Caryophyllales: Cactaceae. AKA Button Cactus.
A small trans-Pecos cactus native to the Big Bend area. Very similar to Epithelantha micromeris but much smaller.
We soon accomplished our goal in Carlsbad Caverns park. Another beautiful desert garden with many interesting plants including large extensive colonies of Epithelantha micromeris.
"Chiluda" endémica del desierto chihuahuense mexicano, sólo hay dos especies en esta familia: Micromeris y Bokei, ésta última presenta espinas más tupidas..
Unlike many cacti this species is not unpleasant to the touch. Most of these growths will produce` flowers albeit very small ones during the next few weeks. The lower growth on the left of the picture is producing it's flowers now.
