The colors of Ukraine for the Smile on Saturday group - SoS.
S0S - also an internationally recognized distress signal.
The unusual texture comes from a macro image of a microfiber towel. Several years ago, I was playing around with macros on my old Canon G12 [my favorite camera - alas, left on a plane and never recovered]. I snapped a photo of a towel we used for drying our cars and got the interesting texture above. That original was a dull goldish color, which I saturated yellow and blue in photoshop and then pieced together here. I couldn't find a circular black frame, so I vignetted the image in mac Photos to get the black background.
Btw, I have tried taking macros of other microfiber cloths with other cameras in the years since, but I never get anything that looks remotely like that old towel. I don't know if it was the cloth or the camera or me, but that original seems to be one of a kind.
A small group of us, led by Andy Cook, valiantly set off on the hike to Red Rock Falls. And then the rain began. And then got harder. And then the hail fell. Taking cover under a sparse tree I was soon find out that my new Shimoda backpack was up to the task. I couldn’t get to the rain cover without exposing the contents to drenching rain. Didn’t need to. Everything on the inside was dry. Had we not already made it relatively close to the falls I confirmed with Andy later that we would have turned back. But fortunately, on we went. It continued to rain, and hail a bit, but slacked off to a tolerable degree. Climbing around the rocks near the head of the falls wasn’t dangerous per se but to this sea level guy, still a bit nerve racking. But the views!!!! My microfiber cloth was already drenched and I didn’t know if the images would be ruined by rain drops on the lens, but everything turned out fine. This is my favorite image of the trip, enhanced greatly by the experience of getting it. It’s an HDR composite of 36 imaged taken from the top to the bottom of the falls in segments and then put together in Lightroom. (Thank you Adobe) (Sony a1, 16-35mm lens at 16mm, f/16, ISO 125 (which I’m sure I thought was on 100 at the time) and shutter speeds from 1/320 second to 1/5 of a second.)

After a few days of windy conditions over Lake Michigan the waves hit Cave Point. A small section of the coast in Door County Wisconsin, Cave Point is more similar to the coast of Maine then Wisconsin, full of cliffs, rocky outcroppings and underwater caves.
The high waves were crashing relentlessly along the shore, splashing huge geysers of water into the air. The water would pour over the rocks and into the forest before violently retreating back into the churning lake.
To shoot this scene I got absolutely drenched. Something told me to bring a lot of microfiber drying rags with me and I pretty much used them all. Good thing for waterproof clothing and weather sealed cameras!!

The first thing that I always do when I remove a lens cap is to clean the lens with a microfiber cloth before taking any photos. But those little cloths have a way of eventually getting lost. So I am hoping that this new little pouch that I just acquired will end that problem.
The pouch has a hook on it to attach to my camera bag, and it contains a microfiber cloth attached on the inside that can be pulled out, and then stuffed back in when I'm finished using it.

Flickr friends, I have been having Internet problems that seem to be getting worse, so please bear with me if I'm slow to comment.
I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't guess what this is - microfiber cleaning cloths! I took a macro of an orange cloth for last week's theme, and was really surprised at how it looked up close. It seemed too dull as just a square of bland goldish orange and it didn't have the woven texture that I associate with the word "cloth., but it did have a cool pattern. I saved it figuring I could do something with it later. Just didn't know it would be this week!
This week, I wanted to do a Detroit Tigers theme and planned to use my hat, but it had way too much white. My shirt was too big for a pleasing macro. After rejecting - or failing at - several other ideas, I came up with this. The orange and blue weren't vibrant enough, so I color-boosted them in iPhoto and pixlrexpress. When I took this photo of McArthur-Burney Falls, I had to use my microfiber cloth constantly wiping out the droplets on my lens. It took me several times to get a relatively clean shot. Love this place. This is my most favorite waterfalls in California.

When I first saw an image of the stunning lower proxy falls, I did not fully understand its size. I knew it was a giant waterfall but was not prepared for the size of it. We also visited a waterfall called fairy falls on that trip, which has a similar form, near Portland, which was way smaller than I imagined at around 20 feet. So I think visiting the fairy falls might have biased my sense of scale.
Once we reached the base of lower proxy falls, we realized its massiveness at 226 feet. The water spray from the falls was quite intense that day, and I had trouble keeping my front element and filters clean. I had forgotten to pack the little microfiber wipes in my haste and learned that they are indeed worth their weight in gold, especially near a waterfall. While we had some technical challenges, what a refreshing break this hike and waterfall turned out to be. We reached the trailhead around noon after some much-needed sleeping in and a pretty heavy breakfast. The 2-mile-long trail along lava fields and dense woodland was the perfect way to enjoy a beautiful day.
...or M for Microfiber.
These synthetic-fiber cloths are great for cleaning, but were almost impossible to photograph. These cloths, a bright yellow under normal light, varied between a dull yellow and a peach-like shade when blasted with flash. I ended up using the incadescent modeling lights on the copystand strobes and a white-balance adjustment in post to obtain what you see here.
Finally I was able to capture a slow moving lightning storm. It’s been a few years since I was able to captured good strikes. Thankfully my lightning trigger did it’s best and I was able to capture a few bolts. The moon was very orange rising behind the clouds. I’m grateful it added a wonderful warm glow to counter balance cooler night sky.
Pro tip: If you have an SUV open the back door and use it as a rain cover. This only works if there’s no wind. Otherwise make sure you constantly wipe your lens with a microfiber cloth so raindrops on your lens don’t ruin your shot.
This is the very first roll of film I ever developed at home. April 15, 2018. I dived in with both feet. Eastman 5219 500T. Not just color film, remjet backed color film. REMJET!! A few passes with the Harbor Freight die grinder and that stuff came right off!
Actually, warm water and a microfiber cloth was all it took. Easy. My experience, do it after you develop, not before. Mike Raso has a video on YT that takes you through it. With bonus screech birds. I'll post the link in comments.
I did this roll in C41, have since switched to DIY ECN-2. Sometimes the difference between the two developers is subtle. Sometimes more dramatic. I would not lose sleep over using C41, but ECN2 is the correct developer for Eastman color negative films. ECN. Eastman Color Negative. Just remember that ECN-2 does not have a thing to do with remjet. It has to do with the color developer used. CD3 for ECN-2, CD4 for C41.Don't fear the remjet!

The surface she's crawling upon isn't ice, but a plastic petri dish, whose sides are coated with PTFE - I usually use these to keep the ant contained between shots (its coated so she can't climb).
From a January thaw that fogged up the coastline nicely here last week. The misty fog was blowing sideways to the point where it was almost impossible to keep the lens clear enough to resolve for more than 30 seconds- constantly wiping the glass with microfiber and numb chilly fingers, still lots of great atmospheric opportunities to be had. As a side note I finally got a proper website up and running here: nateparkerphotography.com/ it's just a Zenfolio plug and play style site but it looks pretty good and now at least I have somewhere to put prices. If anyone has any suggestions I be appreciative to hear them. Thanks for looking and have a nice day- Nate.
