I needed to dump the contents of a Mostek MK36000 series 24-pin 8Kx8 masked ROM. I kludged it up to a Texas Instruments Launchpad kit with a TM4C1294 microcontroller, which uses an ARM Cortex-M4 core. The EPROM is connected to the microcontroller's expansion bus interface, with the data bus buffered by an SN74LVC245A bus buffer because the ROM needs 5V but the microcontroller is not 5V tolerant. Code was written in C to read the ROM contents and output a hex dump over the USB serial interface.

The large red and black clips near the top left corner connect to a lab power supply set to +5.0V. The other red clip is from another output of the lab supply set to +3.3V. The multicolor ribbon jumpers connect to the expansion bus interface and ground of the microcontroller. One corner of the SN74LS245A buffer is seen under the +3.3V clip. The masked ROM, not present in the photo, goes into the breadboard near the middle, between two other sets of ribbon jumpers. The grey clips connect to a mixed-signal oscilloscope I used to verify that the bus was working correctly.

You might ask, "But Eric, why did you go to so much work?" The MK36000 is footprint-compatible with the Motorola MC68764 EPROM, but my Data I/O Unisite won't read the masked ROM, and reports a device insertion error. This is apparently because it draws less current than the EPROM. I tried putting a resistor in parallel from Vdd to GND to match the expected Idd, but wasn't able to make that work.

This has had a "new coat of paint" to misquote the Rev R.W. Awdry, and a few software revisions since the earlier photos.

Revisions to the Arduino IDE required some tweaking of the code to allow the compiler to run without errors.

I caused the original 60kHz receiver to go faulty inadvertently whist "fault" finding - this had stopped working, but it turned out that the problem that was the Time Code transmitter (MSF itself) was off the air for maintenance.

I replaced it with a different type of module (A "Canaduino" unit from Canada), and have since managed to get the original one working by running it off a much reduced supply voltage. The orignal module is now back in my "test bed" with some supplementary circuitry to allow it to work in that environment.

This is an image of the Parallax bs2p40 BASIC Stamp microcontroller (bright orange thing at right) superimposed over a screencap of the Russian FB-sub circuit board containing nuclear warhead arming codes from episodes 20 and 21 of season 6 of "24." I will say no more, in case you're a fan, and aren't caught up to this point currently.

It looks like they added a chip over the empty space where it says "MAIN I/O" and "AUX I/O," and some kind of axial lead component across the end (top in this pic). Also, some kind of connector adapter runs down the whole AUX-side row of pins in the show version.

Today I finished the first version of my grease monitor system. This

device consists of a microcontroller that monitors three temperature

sensors. The microcontroller then illuminates different LEDs to show

how warm the grease is. This can give grease users a better idea of

when to flip to veg oil while driving. It can also be used while

heating grease for filtering and de-watering. See schematic.
