Microchip Technology's Digital Interleaved Power Factor Correction (PFC) Reference Design demonstrates how to realize the benefits of fully digital PFC for green power-supply designs. Specifically, this free reference design provides an easy method to evaluate the power efficiency and features of Microchip’s dsPIC33 “GS” series of Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) for Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPSs), in an interleaved PFC application. All of the documentation, software and Gerber files needed to build this reference design can be obtained for free from Microchip’s Web site at: www.microchip.com/IPFC.

The chipKIT™ Pro MX4 is a microcontroller development board based on the Microchip® PIC32MX460F512L, a member of the 32-bit PIC32 microcontroller family. It is compatible with Digilent's line of Pmods, and is suitable for use with the Microchip MPLAB® IDE tools. The chipKIT Pro MX4 is also compatible for use with the chipKIT MPIDE development environment.

The chipKIT Pro MX4 provides 74 I/O pins that support a number of peripheral functions, such as USB controller, UART, SPI, and I2C ports as well as five pulse-width modulated outputs and five external interrupt inputs. Fifteen of the I/O pins can be used as analog inputs in addition to their use as digital inputs and outputs.

This version utilizes a PIC16F876, but it's easy to port the schematic and software to other PIC's.

The MMC is connected to the SPI pins of the PIC via simple resistor voltage dividers to transform the +5V high levels to about 3.3V used by the MMC. The supply voltage for the MMC (2.7V - 3.6V) comes from a LD1086V33 voltage regulator (3.3V) or equivalent. It is possible to run the PIC at 3.3V, but then the AD converters are not as stable as at 5V. The data-out pin from the MMC goes directly to the PIC, because 3.3V is high for the PIC anyway... read more at: www.captain.at/electronics/pic-mmc/
