Blue skies and lush greenery surround the full-sized reproduction of Michelangelo's "David" in its place of honor at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
"Forest Lawn was founded in 1906 as a not-for-profit cemetery by a group of businessmen from San Francisco. Dr. Hubert Eaton and C. B. Sims entered into a sales contract with the cemetery in 1912. Eaton took over the management of the cemetery in 1917 and is credited as being the "Founder" of Forest Lawn for his innovations of establishing the "memorial park plan" (eliminating upright grave markers) and being the first to open a funeral home on dedicated cemetery grounds. Eaton was a firm believer in a joyous life after death. He was convinced that most cemeteries were "unsightly, depressing stoneyards" and pledged to create one that would reflect his optimistic, Christian beliefs, "as unlike other cemeteries as sunshine is unlike darkness." He envisioned Forest Lawn to be "a great park devoid of misshapen monuments and other signs of earthly death, but filled with towering trees, sweeping lawns, splashing fountains, beautiful statuary, and ... memorial architecture" A number of plaques which state Eaton's intentions are signed "The Builder."
The six Forest Lawn cemeteries contain about 1,500 statues, about 10% of which are reproductions of famous works of art, in various locations. Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper has been recreated in stained glass in the Memorial Court of Honor ‘in vibrant, glowing and indestructible colors.’ There are also a number of full-sized reproductions of other Renaissance sculptures, including Michelangelo's David and Moses. This cemetery is the only place in the world containing a complete collection of replica Michelangelo sculptures, which were made from castings taken from the originals and using marble from the same quarries in Carrara, Italy as used by Michelangelo. Some of the inspiration at Forest Lawn is patriotic rather than pious, such as the Court of Freedom, with its large mosaic of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and a 13-foot (4.0 m)-high statue of George Washington. On display in the "Hall of the Crucifixion" is the panoramic painting by the Polish artist Jan Styka entitled "The Crucifixion." It is the largest permanently mounted religious painting in the world, measuring 195 feet (59 m) in length by 45 feet (14 m) in height. The main gates of Forest Lawn – Glendale are claimed to be the world's largest wrought-iron gates." (Wikipedia)

John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.
Michelangelo's David is the most famous sculpture in the Galleria dell' Accademia di Firenze (Gallery of the Academy in Florence). Tickets for the museum (rather expensive) are best bought in advance.

'Prisão disse Atlas' é uma escultura de mármore de Michelangelo, c. 1525-30. É parte da série dos quatro Prisioneiros Florentinos para o "não-concluído" túmulo de Júlio II.
O Atlas deve o seu nome à forma do bloco não-esculpido, que parece pesar como uma pedra com um esforço bem em cima da cabeça. Na verdade, o bloco tinha que conter a mesma cabeça e um braço, sem distinção.
Michelangelo's David...
Sculpted from Italian Carrara White Marble between the years 1501 and 1504, weighing in at more than 12,000 pounds, standing 17 feet, David remains the most awe-inspiring example of Renaissance Art we could ever imagine being in the presence of. His lifelike countenance is striking. His boyish face exudes an almost unimaginable handsomeness. The ripple of every muscle: the envy of mankind. A Goliath - "Giant Slaying" right hand rests, larger than life at his side. His weapon - a mighty sling, casually drapes over his left shoulder. From it's envisioning, commissioning, creation, to it's current permanent residence for the last 142 years in the Galleria dell'Accademia - the history of this monumental achievement in art is fascinating. Interestingly enough, Michelangelo was not the original sculptor given the task. Rather, in the 37 years prior to him being awarded the commission, two other sculptors had been contracted, made some progress but failed to complete the project. An absolute 'Must-See' while in Florence. Wikipedia does a pretty good job of documenting David's linage if there's interest. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_(Michelangelo)
A shot I took from the Sistine Chapel during our visit to the Vatican in the summer of 2012. Thought I'd play with the blurs and HDR to this timeless masterpiece - I was trying to make Adam and God "pop" out of the painting, but it turned out differently instead and I kinda liked it. This is just another of my post processing experimentation and not meant to offend the purists.
Thank you all for your kind visits and comments/critiques.
