Thoughts, prayers & love sent to everyone in Ukraine at this very difficult time as your country is being invaded.

My lovely wife really didn’t have any concepts in mind for her maternity photos, but she’s seen some work I’ve done with clients in orchards, so that was one thing she requested. So last week we drove around closer to sunset through the back roads of Somis which is littered with orchards of every kind. Lemons, Oranges, Avocados, limes, etc. Tried to find ones with lemons since the yellow stands out nice from the green leaves. Also tried to find one where the rows weren’t too far apart. Also tried to find one east-west facing for the better sun angles. THEN tried to find one with all of those things where we wouldn’t get caught for trespassing.
An hour later after driving around we stumbled across an area I did some client work before. It was a friend-of-a-friend whose family photos I did a couple years ago. Decided to drive by since we were losing light, and sure enough the mom was out there. She remembered me and said OH yeah go and use the orchard anytime you like… So we hopped out there for 20 minutes. I put my camera on a self timer and then ran out there about 70’ away for some different poses. Simple. Kept he processing light and both my wife & I love them.
Figured I might as well post this soon since she’s already dilating and the due date is in less than 3 weeks! If I don’t post for a while, you’ll know why.
I´m leaving for a while for a holiday-trip - so I choose the last pic at the door ... good bye and have a nice time
2013 I’ve vowed to reinvent myself a little bit. Try new things and experiment with different sorts of photography. My wedding business was down last year and whether that was from me raising my prices to accommodate new gear, more experience and higher quality images (which I have since reduced in 2013 to 2010 levels) or because my creativity has become stale, Flickr black-listing me from Explore, or there is more competition from the “I got a new DSLR kit from Costco for Christmas so I’m a professional photographer!” I find the competitive side of me searching more for how to continue to help those who need quality images and competitive prices.
People are generally attracted to photography because it offers a creative outlet and technical challenge of one sort or another. But if that drive to be creative, different and trying new things fade, so will the quality of your work.
So in 2013 I want to try new things. As a recovering metrosexual, I’ve always been fascinated with fashion. Fashion has change dramatically over the past 10 years. Years ago you would never shoot into the sun, that was a big portrait no-no. It was about high contrast, sharp images and not cutting off any limbs at the joints. Rules. Then the influx of digital cameras helped make photographers out of everyone, even those who didn’t follow the rules. And just like when slang becomes accepted as official lexicon, so does different ways of photography. Either you adapt or you fall behind.
So I’m experimenting with models, with my studio, with accepting different gigs (paid and not paid) to expand my horizons and not be so closed-minded when it comes to what I feel is an acceptable way of taking a picture. Like I preach in my classes, “If you like the picture, then it’s a great photograph”
Katie is on Flickr and we hung out a few weeks ago close to sunset in a dry riverbed where she was nice enough to put her camera down and work it for my lens. I was intentionally going for the blown-out, high key look and she was gracious enough to accommodate my silly requests of posing like, “you’re being thrown off a train”

unfortunately the quality of the pic is not as usually - looks a little like 19th century ...
this is a very old motorbike-jacket from the family fund. I tried it for fun and first I can´t believe that it fits ...

My buddy Ozzie. The most chill dog I have ever had despite being a Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix. His big excitement for the day is moving from the dog bed to the dog chair.
If there were to be metrosexual dogs he would be their poster child. It seems the only Jackie traits he got are his coloring and stout legs. He did get the Chihuahua facial features but none of the nervousness that seems to come with the breed.
All in all he's just a happy camper who hasn't have a care in the world.
