‘Life is miserable here. I am very worried, I don’t have anything. My biggest fear is, what next? Where am I going to stay?’

Messy’s family climbed on to the roof of their home in Nsanje, in a desperate attempt to escape the rapidly rising floodwaters. Rescue boats arrived but could not take everyone, so Messy’s husband stayed behind.

A boat returned for him but it capsized and he drowned, leaving Messy’s children without a father. The family heard about other people sheltering in schools in Mchere so they travelled there to find refuge.

Concern gave Messy and other families urgently needed items including soap, buckets, blankets and mosquito nets to help their short-term recovery.

As families go back to their villages, we are now providing seeds, tools and training so they can rebuild their lives.

Tigger's getting old -- he's 20 this year. He's not quite as fastidious as he used to be. Unfortunately, his messy eating is the least of the problems that causes.

I think Andrew got that pushed in his face because he did something similar to Katy.

Messier 82, also known as the Cigar Galaxy, is an irregular starburst galaxy that can be located within the Ursa Major constellation. The first known discover was by Johann Elert Bode on December 31, 1774, though the galaxy was later rediscovered by Pierre Mechain in 1779 and then recorded by Charles Messier on 1781.. Its distinct web of clouds is a result of enormous hydrogen clouds blasting out from its central region of rapid star formation. The Cigar Galaxy is about 12 million light years away from earth and has a diameter of 37,000 light years. Its brightness allows for it to be visible even with a pair of binoculars as a thin streak of light.

This image is the result of four separate images taken with different wave-lengths filters by the Stocker AstroScience ACE 24” telescope and then reduced and color combined by Bobby Martinez using MIRA Pro.

Captured 27 Apr 20, Springfield VA, Bortle 8, cloudy, good transparency, avg seeing, crescent Moon. 8 inch SCT f5.2, MallinCam DS10C, Orion Skyglow filter, E5 sec, G25, bin 2, single image. PS edits.

from Wikipedia

Messier 38 or M38, also known as NGC 1912, is an open cluster of stars in the constellation of Auriga. It was discovered by Giovanni Batista Hodierna before 1654 and independently found by Le Gentil in 1749. Open cluster M36 and M37, also discovered by Hodierna, and often grouped together with M38. Distance is about 1.066 kpc (3,480 ly) away from Earth. The open cluster NGC 1907 lies nearby on the sky, but the two are most likely just experiencing a fly-by, having originated in different parts of the galaxy.

The cluster's brightest stars form a pattern resembling the Greek letter Pi or, according to Webb, an "oblique cross".

Walter Scott Houston described its appearance as follows:

"Photographs usually show a departure from circularity, a feature quite evident to visual observers. Older reports almost always mention a cross shape, which seems more pronounced with small instruments (evident in wide-field images). A view with a 24-inch reflector on a fine Arizona night showed the cluster as irregular, and the host of stars made fruitless any effort to find a geometrical figure."

At its distance of 1066 pc., its angular diameter of about 20 arc minutes corresponds to about 4.0 parsecs (13 light years), similar to that of its more distant neighbor M37. It is of intermediate age at about 290 million years. From the population of about 100 stars, this open cluster features a prominent yellow giant with the apparent magnitude +7.9 and spectral type G0 as its brightest member. This corresponds to an absolute magnitude of -1.5, or a luminosity of 900 Suns. For comparison, the Sun would appear as a faint magnitude +15.3 star from the distance of M38.

This little guy is one of several tortoises in the Black Beauty Ranch, a sanctuary for abused and neglected animals. I was using the rented EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens to get close and shoot some "portraits" while he was grazing the grass in his enclosure. Only after I looked at this photo on a large screen I saw that there's that one blade of grass falling out of his mouth. For a slow animal, he was hustling pretty quickly, so I snapped a bunch of shots, and this one seemed most successful. The lens turned out to be very sharp, but it also works great for closeup portraits - I was not more than 20 feet away and the background is beautifully blurred, even if it's only a few feet behind the subject.
